Okay, I'm normally a political and news poster..but am searching for some new BBC shows to addict myself to post Downton Abbey. Hoping Freepers can help. There was a thread about this a while back.
After realizing that the Brits are light years better than us for turning out watchable, absorbing and well acted, directed and produced "who dunnits", and as I am on a political sabbatical for obvious reasons..
Here's my completed viewing list over the last three months: 1. Prime Suspect: Helen Mirren 2. Foley's War: all except the new ones that aren't out yet. 3. George Gently...Seasons 1-4.
I am currently addicted to the latter, especially seeing as Lee Ingleby as Sargeant John Bacchus is the best(and yummiest) actor EVER...and the chemistry between him and Martin Shaw as DCI Gently is priceless. Similar is interaction between Michael Kitchen as DCI Christopher Foley and his driver, Sam Stuart played by Honeysuckle Weeks in Foyle's War.
MI-5, Sherlock, Inspector Lewis, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Death in Paradise, DCI Banks, Foyles War, Inspector George Gently, Midsomer Murders
I vote for Sherlock although there are only a few episodes.
Wallander is outstanding it stars Kenneth Branagh as a Swedish detective.
I love Midsomer Murders and all of the Agatha Christie based series including the more obscure “Partners in Crime” series featuring Tommy & Tuppence.
I find myself watching more and more of the British shows and less and less of anything else.
Isn't that the truth...no one does Sherlock Holmes like Jeremy Brett.
Try Sherlock. Your local library may have the DVDs for free so you can try it out and see if you like it; there are six episodes so far (each episode is about 1 1/2 hours long).
But having said that, this one is as good as anything out of the UK .. quite possibly the best American crime drama series ever, but surely the best since the 90s, imho.
the best Brit mystery show: Midsomer Murders on netflix http://dvd.netflix.com/Search?v1=Midsomer+Murders&ac_abs_posn=6&fcld=true&ac_rel_posn=6&ac_category_type=movie&raw_query=mid&raw_query=mid
mumbels.......too hard to understand....no Basil Rathbone
I’ll have my ten year old granddaughter show me how to use my Ipad this weekend. LOL
Thanks icbi!
The guy on the right in the pic you attached played a murderer in a recent George Gently,,a nasty perp.
Thanks Tomkat.
What spoiler? Mathew Crowley? It’s been shown and talked about since the series ended. People have been blogging about it. I’m just one of thousands who talk about the series. Please don’t drop this solely on me.
Thanks for the thread. I will check out some of the other Brit shows recommended here.
I am watching it as I have time. I don’t read blogs and haven’t talked to anyone. This was unwanted news to me, and there is no way you can describe Downtown Abbey as a mystery, in any case, which I believe is the subject matter of this thread. I am dropping it on you because you are the one who thoughtlessly and gratuitously spoiled it for me. Very annoying. Thanks a bunch.
If you can find it, Pulaski TV Detective. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092431/
Brit show from the 80’s. A&E ran it back then and I video taped it. Tapes have since gone bad, but need to find it on DVD.
“Rosemary and Thyme” is in the “Murder, She Wrote” vein. Lighthearted and well acted. With some beautiful gardens thrown in. :)
I’m having trouble getting into Upstairs, Downstairs. Too silly for me. I know many folks love it, but I just can’t get into it.
You're quite welcome.
Wallander.
You may like “The Paradise” and “Ripper Street”.
I have a couple of her books in my Amazon wish list. She also writes with a group of authors called The Medieval Murderers. I’ve read three of those so far, and have more on my bookshelf. Some of my other favorite Medieval mystery authors are Michael Jenks, Maureen Ash, Simon Beaufort, Susanna Gregory, and Candace Robb. Love the characters they have created.
