Are Duracell batteries actually better batteries, or is it marketing?
Good Luck!
I tested both many moons ago. All three lasted a long time -but they all had the same curve. They suddenly dropped out and died.
Compared with zinc-carbon batteries of the Leclanché or zinc chloride types, alkaline batteries have a higher energy density and longer shelf-life, with the same voltage.
In my own personal history, Duracell got out in front of the marketing of alkaline batteries, and in my primitive mind, I identify the "copper top" with this type of battery, and I always buy them.
Easy for me to answer because I have experienced a practical test of both the Duracell Ultra AAA and the Energizer Max AAA
... My Harley RF receiver would recognize the signal for about 50 Yards with the Duracell and would hold the charge for about a week. Bugged me because it was just out of range from the garage to the house. Accepted this for a few years. Tried the Energizer Max and not only do I now get RF reception to the house, but I walked another 50 yards away before I lost contact. Plus the Energizer last about twice as long. Same experience with my camera’s and tactical light with the various sizes. Energizer MAX all the way!

The leaking of internal stuff which ruins delecate connections is what I was trying to address. I buy RayOvacs if I’m going to use the batteries up quickly, then remove them and toss away. If I’m gonna stroe soemthing, like a flashlight, I use Duracell ONLY. I keep them in my Camera. Ruined a previous camera by leaving RayOvacs in it.
That's my experience with them as well. I've discontinued Rayovac purchases and will only use the remaining stockpile in high-consumption situations, where they'll be drained quickly and replaced.
I’ve found that lowly Safeway (in CA)premium batteries (also sold at Vons in CA) work every bit as long in cameras as Duracells.
Those are second generation, the 3rd generation are now available at Amazon.

Kirkland should be in these tests.
I use only Kirkland’s from Costco. They made be made in China, but they are great batteries - and a fraction of the cost of Duracell’s.
I do agree Duracell’s generally seem the best. But price per value - Kirkland’s are the winner..........
I switched from Duracell to CVS (pharmacy) brand..cheaper, and last longer.
Well, last week I needed batteries, and CVS weren’t on Sale so I bought some Sunbeam Alkaline ones at the Dollar Tree.
Figured they would be uber crappy. They’ve lasted longer in my wireless mouse (which I always forget to turn off) than either Duracells, or CVS brand.
AGREE here... I buy Rav-o-vac precharged rechargable NiMh. They are best deal going... I tried a few brands of rechargables, many more expensive than these are. I was doing foreclosure cleanup work and getting 400+ pictures daily for nearly 3 years. I used the rechargables and a couple times had to pick up some because mine happened to die that day and I did not have charged batteries, Nothing scientific, but from my experience, the fully charged rechargables would last as long as standard energizers or duracells I rotated in every now and then. Depending on amount of flash pictures I needed to take, there were times the new precharged batteries would last nearly 3 full days, well over 1000 pictures.
Duracell better than most
No question
Eveready was originally “Ever-Ready”, and was making batteries well over a century ago.
Duracell used to be good. Last couple of years though they leak almost instantly, have had two flashlights ruined.
I can charge 12 at a time, keeps everything running around here.
Yes, I realized that after the link was already posted, of course .. lol .. thanks ansel
“The Radio Shack batteries lasted 2 days longer than the coppertops.”
Someone (Consumer Reports ifirc)published a report ten or so years ago that agrees with what you found. Radio Shack lasted the longest.
I seem to recall that Duracell was the Alkaline version of the Everready or some other popular “standard batt.
I’ve been using rechargeables for years, so I don’t have sufficient data.
