RENO, Nev. -- Shots rang out in a Stead neighborhood early Sunday afternoon after two pit bulls attacked a jogger and his dog.
It happened on Rising Sun Drive. Police say the man lives in the area and was jogging in a residential area when the pit bulls attacked.
"Two loose, unrestrained pit bulls attacked his dog and when he tried to separate the pit bulls and his dog, the pit bulls attacked him," said Sgt. Joe Lever of the Reno Police Department. "He was jogging with a concealed firearm which he has a permit for. He discharged the firearm twice, striking one dog who died instantly. We followed a blood trail and found the other in a backyard with a through-and-through wound."
Police say the dog was standing when they found it and was rushed to a nearby animal hospital.

Laziness? Do you know how man government agencies are working to stop that?
remind me
I don’t know where you live, but wherever it is the sun is definitely over the yardarm.
“He discharged the firearm twice, striking one dog who died instantly”.. Sad. Oh wait, it was a Pit Bull. GOOD.

not that there is anyone around with the wherewithal to get it
The most horrid death I could imagine is getting torn limb from limb by dogs. Give me a nice clean bullet over that any day. The dead dog was treated more humanely than what it would have done to the man who shot him.
Okay, I will bite. They may be cute and adorable, but their physiology makes them dangerous. It’s akin to taming a lion or tiger. You might think they are docile, but once they strike, they do a lot of damage.
These dogs are dangerous animals, because they ARE STRONG.
“Congested Area” is nebulous on purpose.
probably means within city limits.
we used to have silencers abounding for this very reason.
Maybe. Maybe not. Not sure about that. In any event a lot of them sure make the news. As you say the owners are often the blame. The combination of a careless owner and a Pit bull can result in a vicious animal
What caliber was the firearm he used? He probably used a .380 or 9mm.
Agree 100%.
So they can nurse it back to health so they can shoot it themselves.
I carry when i work in my lower back yard because in the subdivision behind us some renters keep three ‘pit bulls’, and one day last summer they got loose and i had to retreat behind the deer fence in my vegetable garden. I used a spare metal fence post to nail the.leader on the side of the head. I made my way to my own back deck where they followed me up.
To not carry is to choose to be defenseless. I am no longer defenseless in my own back yard.
Ah, the “LITTLE TEAPOT!”
And no, I won’t say why the prostitutes of Paris called him that!
I never trust em, particularly when I see more than one on the loose. They are descendents of dogs used in war. I had a large Doberman that took a discernable disliking to pit bull type dogs and I’ve never seen a dog smarter than my Old Doby.
It’s not malicious, they’re descendents of war dogs. No matter what the temperament you think they have, when there’s more than one of them they become very unpredictable as they’ll revert to pack mentality.
There is no reason to own them. They don’t even make good guard dogs.
Hubby and I were walking our two leashed dogs last weekend when this friggin’ pitbull comes streaking across a yard, dragging her leash. She immediately goes for the smaller dog, my 42-pound setter-mix, not the 65-pound Australian shepherd-mix my husband was walking. I always carry a cane which works very well for keeping dogs at bay, if not, I can start smashing the errant dog over the head with it. Thank goodness, my dog is pretty submissive, and didn’t respond to the other dog’s aggression so I only had to worry about keeping my pup from getting bit, not keeping her from wanting to fight, too.
We’re screaming at the dog to go home, when the owner comes out and grabs the dog. Oops. Turns out the dog is a rescued “junkyard” dog she is trying to rehabilitate, she’s only had her a couple of months, blah, blah, blah.
Well, dang it, our dogs are rescues, too. One is an elderly gentleman that was “too old” to attract any interest, and the little setter-mix was just broke, too much trauma too early in her life (she’s fine now, thank you very much).
This constant push to adopt a pitbull just irks me because
as “sweet and adorable” as they may be, there are thousands of good dogs waiting to be adopted that would be ten times as sweet and adorable without wrecking havoc on the neighborhood.
I carry protection every morning when I walk my dog for this reason.
They are dangerous for several reasons not just because they are strong.
A ridgeback is probably stronger but is a much safer dog to have around. Because they are controllable.
Once a pit bull goes into kill mode there is very little you can do to controll it. It will keep killing until it is sated or until something kills it. Their strength of course is a major factor in people being unable to physically control them.
We have pit bulls in our neighborhood. I carry whenever I walk around the block and have pepper spray for the boys to carry.
