Leave It to Beaver: Frank Bank Dies; So Long Lumpy Rutherford

Actor Frank Bank died this morning, one day after he turned 71. Today is his friend and former co-star Tony Dow’s 68th birthday.

Bank was primarily know for his role as Clarence “Lumpy” Rutherford on the Leave It to Beaver sitcom in the 1950s and 60s.

He was quite funny as Lumpy, especially when he’d act all respectful and docile in the presence of his father (played by Richard Deacon). I met him once at a hotel, where he was appearing at one of those nostalgia conventions, and he seemed rather friendly and was enjoying meeting people.

Lumpy’s father would get upset when the boys called his son Lumpy.

IIRC, Mr. Rutherford was a dork and although Ward and June tried to be nice to him - they didn’t like him.
