Horrible.
What part of parenting do people not understand?
Indeed most people don’t THINK any more.
I just have to say that I didn’t even let the dogs in the yard while I was on the riding mower. The thought of a toddler out there...
When I was in law school, we read lots of lawnmower cases for torts. You’d think parents would know to keep kids away.
My stepfather was an attorney and I guess he’d read some of those same cases because we were never allowed out on the lawn when he was mowing.
How sad for this little girl and her family.
It states right their on the owners manual it is operating insructions. If I remember right, cannot check to much snow right now 12 inches fell, and the yard is to soft, wheelchair would sink) there is a label right on my zero turn mower regarding lawnmowers and children. What now do we have to have back up signal on lawn mowers and the use of video camera on the back of a riding mower? some people are just idiots, yet every year there are too many accidents involving a child getting a leg, hand foot or ? cut off. As for a snowblower it has a label not to put hand in auger. but to many people do this too.
My father a defense attorney and as such was equally cautious about a great number of things (sometimes obsessively so). His lawnmower reference was about someone who had a piece of wire discharged into his heart from a tractor. That story stuck. I NEVER let our children come out while mowing, EVER.
attempting to placate the grammar police.
2 year olds can be pretty quick. And fearless. This entire situation probably played out very quickly. I won’t pass any judgement onto the parents without details.
Seconded.
Mine were taught long before age 2 that when I said “hot” then they’d better stay away from whatever. Their little minds never forgot. I’ll give you that some kids can be stubborn but that’s no excuse. Parents need to be the parents and keep them and the dogs inside when dad is mowing or using other potentially dangerous tools.
10-1 he didn’t even look behind him when backing up. See it all the time with people on riding mowers.
One guy backed into his wife heading down the driveway in a car.
Agreed what a horror. It is something the father will live with everyday remaining of his life. That poor child gravely damaged.
Everyone knows the difference between a dropped word, a typo like hte for the, etc. and using words incorrectly that the writer clearly thinks are correct - misuse of homonyms being among the most common. That’s just about - dare I say it - a failure of education, and the people who react to correction with snarls, insults and threats of violence reveal how invested they are in remaining ignorant.
For my part, if I wrote that 3 + 2 = 32, I would be grateful if someone informed me, no, it’s 5.
How did you teach them what "hot" meant?
I told my son, who was out with me after I changed the belt on the riding mower which then started to smoke due to routing it over a guide instead of under, not to touch it it was "hot"! As I was walking toward the garage to get my tools (the mower was off) he reached under to touch the belt and got a small burn on his finger. After that, he knew what "hot" meant. Before that I'm not sure.
Had a friend in the country who let his young son ride on the tractor while he was mowing the hay. Hit a bump boy went over backwards under the mower. No time to stop.
My wife said “I know why when you are mowing you say I don’t want anyone near me”
Very sad. Children and machinery don’t mix. Keep them away at all times.
What now do we have to have back up signal on lawn mowers and the use of video camera on the back of a riding mower?

Now that is an excellent idea that has a lot of merit.
Or maybe a siren and flashing lights, and force people to get a license to operate the riding lawn mower, then ‘they’ can demand you have seat belts, air bags, roll bar and/or an enclosed cab and you wear a helmet, goggles and most definitely get a permit from the city citing the date and hour you will be mowing so a City/County Inspector can check out your operation.
Basically, treat you mowing your lawn like wives were treated in the past and driven out of the baby sitting job for working neighbors.
Then, when you can no longer mow your lawn, the undocumented Democrats will be able to get employment by mowing your lawn and every so often the city/town/county will fine you for hiring undocumented labor.
And the beat goes on......
Dreadful.
