The Funniest People Who Have Ever Lived (Vanity)

Posted on 04/12/2013 6:00:41 PM PDT by fhayek

In a recent thread about the death of Jonathan Winters, it was stated that he was one of the funniest men who ever lived. He WAS funny, but he wouldn't be on my list of the funniest who have ever lived. And by "ever", I mean since the dawn of recorded media. My list of the funniest people who have ever lived would be as follows:

Groucho Marx
John Cleese
Mike Myers
Bill Cosby
Peter Cook
Rowan Atkinson
Charlie Chaplin
George Carlin
Mel Brooks
Woody Allen
Douglas Adams.

The sole criterion is that they make me laugh. Hard. Everybody is different. What makes you laugh might make me cringe. And verse visa. So list away...

They're all different "types"...and it was their individual personality that made things click. There's so many of them from the good old days.

George Burns and Gracie Allen(one of the earliest), Lucy

The top four imo and I don’t know anyone who could touch any of these are:
1: Bob Hope
2:Jack Benny
3:Groucho
4:Mel Brooks and even he is not good in some of them.

All the Marx Brothers were good but Groucho was head and shoulders above the other ones.

The names on my list that are probably unfamiliar:
Rowan Atkinson is a Brit, probably best know as "Mr. Bean". But watch him in "The Black Adder" series. Hilarious.

Peter Cook (also a Brit) was partnered with Dudley Moore, before Moore became famous. I once saw him do an interview with Dick Cavett, and I thought I was going to asphyxiate.

Cleese was in Monty Python, brilliant in the Britcom "Faulty Towers". Douglas Adams wrote "A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy".

I've seen Rickles, Henny Youngman and Carlin at nightclubs. They were class acts (aka gentleman) all the way. My side hurt from laughing.

I was surprised at Rickles...he was like a sweet grandfather.

Douglas Adams? Don’t think so.

Shakespeare is the man.

BUMMER! I just noticed the Big Broadcast for Sunday does not have episode titles and dates! What is this? The one for April 21 is fine, but there are nothing but titles for April 14. We have an Inner Sanctum and Molle Mystery Theatre and The Cisco Kid.

I was going to send you my html coded synopsis list, because I’ll be out on Sunday (for one of the few times in our history), but I can’t without specifics of the shows.

Yes Newhart was good but he depended on other actors to play off who were just right. For instance, Larry and the Darryls.
