Most Over Rated Musician

There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

Of The four in The Beatles George Harrison was highly under rated. He was the guitar sound of The Beatles never really given credit for his music. Harrison also gave us The Traveling Wilburys. Over rated as a musician IMO John Lennon. Great song writer though and a moderate singer. His Secular Humanist /Socialist song called Imagine is about one of the depressing songs ever written.

When you went to a Don Willaims concert you got your moneys worth then some. The poor guy that sang back up on Amanda caught it though LOL.

I first heard "Imagine" on a German radio station in 1972. I immediately thought it was inspired by Marx's Communist Manifesto. However, I didn't know who sang it because the DJ didn't back announce what he was playing, so I assumed it was some obscure American or British Communist balladeer. They didn't play it on the Armed Forces Network's AM station in Kaiserslautern, where I followed the rock charts, so it was several months before I knew who sang it.

Incredibly, I read that "Imagine"--a song that speaks of "no heaven...above us only sky"--is often performed today at funerals and memorial services. It had better not be performed at mine. I would prefer something like "Meet Me There" or "The Holy City."

To add to the Dylanology expressed above (quiz: anyone here know Dylanology’s inventor’s name?), no major poet or literary critic considers Bob Dylan a poet. So much the for the can’t sing but he’s a great poet line! Wrong again, back to can sing Heino, I guess!

Returning to the free market theme of the music industry, Philadelphia was the center of manipulation, payola and corruption, with Dick Clark the biggest payola recipient who got away with it, while Alan Freed, who at least had good taste unlike Clark, was destroyed (was it a “let’s get the Jew” campaign? I dunno), and the teenage idol factory there Cameo-Parkway Records Home of the Twist, the Mashed Potato, Pony Time, Gravy and even Bristol Stomp (later bought out by the notorious accountant Allen B. Klein, whose ABKCO Records is still in business after his demise, and has at least Eric Burdon on its label.)

My dad passed a year and a half ago and I choose the music foor his service. I pretty much knew what he liked as our taste were about the same in that area. Jesus Hold My Hand by Vern Gosdin {me and dad used to play that one together on our six strings}, Green Pastures by Emmylou Harris and Rick Skaggs, Are you afraid to die by Ricky Skaggs, The Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn, Emmylou Harris and Skaggs, Help Me by Kris Kristofferson, Lazarus Come Forth by The Bishops.

Some modern songs are OK and in a case like a funeral words mean everything. Personally if I have a say I want those and I'll never walk in the valley again by The Primitive Quartet played at mine. Maybe even Why Me Lord by Kristofferson.

I like older rock from the 80's on back and the same with country. I even like Motown back in the days of The Four Tops, Chilites, Stylistics, Percy Sledge. I have some old P,P,&M folk albums and like Bluegrass and Gospel also. Today's stuff on the radio? Forget it. Like Hank Jr says I'm a Dinosaur.

I attended a memorial service today for a woman who was a ukulele enthusiast. Her class of about 20 ukulele players performed the gospel song The Flaming Ukulele in the Sky.
