Most Over Rated Musician
Posted on 04/05/2013 7:20:30 PM PDT by MNDude
There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

Please. I grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, so spare me your supposed Big City sophistication. Springsteen is a joke, a mutt, a hack, a poseur and a musical impersonator. I’ve heard all his stuff. It’s ALL duff, and as a guitarist, he’s sh!t.

He probably thought they were German WW2 vets or Hindenburg survivors.

I never got Eric Clapton's appeal. I mean, the guy can play guitar, but so can a thousand other guys. Jimi Hendrix, Richard Thompson, Junior Brown, Eddie Van Halen, Buckethead, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmore - any of them can play anything Clapton can play.
He never innovated anything, unless you consider incorporating (stealing) the guitar licks from almost-forgotten blues musicians and not giving them credit as innovation.
As a singer, he's a bore. His stage presence is blah. His songwriting is mundane.
That's just my opinion, but I never understood the fuss.

I’m inclined to agree...I mean ok, he was on Layla and I Shot the Sheriff, cool songs, but when I hear him play guitar, it just doesn’t grab me. I think he’s pretty much coasted on his legacy with Cream all this time.

I don't think I've ever read a less apt metaphor on FR. Quite an accomplishment.
The head coach directs every aspect of a football team; he doesn't pick a personnel team and chief of staff who in turn choose players and then tell them to go have fun. The Kennedy center awards are selected based on lifetime achievements and some of the President's people are involved in the approval, but 0 is no more than a distant spectator in that process.
Congratulations for giving me a great laugh at your lack of football knowledge, though.

Agree.
I’d rather listen to Stevie Ray play the blues.

OK, then make it the Ravens' owner.
And the laugh I gave you is only my humble effort to repay you for the chortle you gave me by suggesting Barry didn't know who he was talking to when he was talking to the surviving LZ members.

Blind pig + acorn.
What matters is that they were recognized regardless of who was POTUS at the time.

Well, Barry's recognition, coupled with your passionate defense are only reinforcing my estimation of the degree to which they are over rated.
Led Zep is, IMHO, a band that fifth graders fell in love with decades ago, for no other reason than because the eighth graders thought they were cool...
