Most Over Rated Musician

Posted on 04/05/2013 7:20:30 PM PDT by MNDude

There are a lot of lousy musicians that are a lot more popular than they deserve, but in you opinion, who are the three most over rated musicians (or groups) of all time?

Though I'll agree with you as far as post PF Roger Waters goes... Stinking socialist hypocrite!

And he treated Rick Wright like crap. Thank god Rick had one last chance to tour with Gilmour before he passed.

I guess we’ll need a ‘Most Under-Rated Musician’ thread after this one.

“Bob Seger and Billy Joel.”

Can’t agree with you there. If someone were to say they were in the top 10 of all time, that might be a stretch. But I don think they are viewed that way.

Billy Joel was at 51 on the VH1 list and Bob Seger didn’t make it all. Joel’s ranking seems about right - he had a bit wider range of styles and wrote more songs than Seger. Seger probably should have cracked the top 100 - his music still sounds good 30-40 years later and he had a lot of good music.

I personnally prefer Seger, but see Billy Joel as a more accomplished artist.

You have to wonder what that sounds like.

Just think, there were other pictures that were rejected for the cover.

Hey, has the great discovery that “Dylan can’t sing” been made yet on the thread?

Many years ago, a friend said to me, "Dylan writes a lot of his songs sitting on the toilet." To which I replied, "Too often, he forgot to flush."

Ah, okay. I’m sure he’s funnin’ ya.
Ironically, I have been working on my Beatles collection the last few weeks (yeah, the collection I started in January 1966 when I bought my first Beatles record, ‘Day Tripper’) and have been stumbling across some truly unbelievable YouTubes and rare audios. A lot of stuff has surfaced over the decades. Have you heard John Lennon’s (solo) demo of ‘Bad to Me’, a song he gave to Billy J. Kramer? The Beatles never recorded it themselves. I had no idea this recording had surfaced.

“There’s The Beatles and then there’s the rest,” I always say. Whoever is in 2nd place isn’t even remotely close. (Anybody else reading this post who wants to argue, go play in the street. Don’t bother.)

FRegards,
LH

You turned me on to some good groups some time back and some made it to my collection, you may or may not recall..love Pokey Lafarge, Cameo by New Country Rehab, Hang Me (forget the band) and a few others. I would have never otherwise have found them. That is utility.

ANY Rap singer, pick one.

Pookie Hudson of the Spaniels could rap...

Play It Cool (1954)

...and he could also croon.

You Gave Me Peace of Mind (1956)

My point is you can't even hum their songs in the shower - if you can't do that, how do you call it "music"?

How do you hum that screeching 'tard going on about eating pudding?

...... to cite one of numerous examples.

Jeff Beck

If you want to see the evolution of a musician over the years, Jeff Beck is a terrific one to watch.

If you haven't seen it, you really need to check out Jeff Beck's "Live at Ronnie Scott's." Check it out on You Tube (plus you'll get an introduction to a phenomenal young bass player) and you'll probably want to buy the BluRay. Incredible.

“I’ll also add Billy Joel, Jethro Tull, Coldplay, Neil Young, and the worst of the worst over-rated bands, The Dave Matthews Band.”

Wow - I love Tull. Just goes to show how tastes differ from one person to another.
But yeah - I hate Matthews also.
