A stand up comic once when refering to then tv series T.J. Hooker and Shatner, say “You don’t understand, this guy used to be commander of a Starship!”

When it comes to “singing”, he’s like almost A-OK, but acting? The worst. Actor. Evah!

Even though it was my favorite show at the time, there’s several things I couldn’t understand about Star Trek. Why did the captain of a fleet lead dangerous expeditions into unknown places? That was like Admiral Halsey leaving the helm of the flagship to lead the Marines onto enemy beaches during WWII. And why was the doctor allowed to stand on the bridge and offer advice when he should have been in the doctor room doctoring?

That's why they had redshirts, errr... expendable crewmen.
That way the first and second in command could leave the ship and venture into unknown danger: they knew the redshirt would take a bullet/phaser blast/etc. for them.
If you want to see this meme taking to an extreme, pick up the book titled "Redshirts", by John Scalzi. It's hilarious.

Much like Dr Who, Star Trek stirred up the actor and imagination in many a kid.
I have a parody of Star trek that we made back in the 70’s
Hilarious stuff, but to raunchy to post here.
