Man's horror as mountain lion snatches and eats his DOG during walk

A Colorado dog owner has been left without his furry friend after the animal was grabbed off the street by a mountain lion, who killed and ate the canine.

The incident last week in a Colorado Springs, Colorado, gated community, was the third such attack in two months. The unidentified man told authorities that he was walking his Dachshund when the mountain lion sprung out of some bushes and grabbed the dog - leash and all - and ran off.

Michael Seraphin, spokesman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, told KOAA-TV: 'The mountain lion came out from some bushes that are in close proximity to the street that he was walking on, grabbed the Dachshund, and tucked and pulled hard enough to yank the leash out of his hand.'

The cougar then killed the small dog and ate it. Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman Michael Seraphin said the mountain lion was deemed a threat to public safety and a plan was set to capture it after the incident last Wednesday.

Several hours after the attack, the mountain lion was successfully trapped.

Airedale? I think a Rhodesian Ridgeback would be more appropriate. They were bred to hunt lions.

Another airtight argument for indoor only cats. Doesn’t help with canines unfortunately.

Hope the big kitty enjoyed the very expensive hot dog before his date with the gas chamber. < / sarcasm >

A mountain lion was attacking a midsized dog in Woodland Park Colorado a few years back. The dog's owner just caught a flash of what was going on out of the corner of his eye. Thinking it was a large yellow dog, he ran out in his back yard and pulled the big cat off bare handed. A short scuffle ensued but the dog and owner both survived with a few injuries.

“Killed the Lion for being a Lion. Sad!”

If this mountain lion was brazen enough to grab a dog that was on a leash and in the immediate company of a human, then it is extremely close to grabbing a child.

I have a domestic Maine Coon cat that I wouldn’t pull off of a meal if he intended to have it...

much less a mountain lion.

Cats’ll mess you up.

In the never-ending fight between cats and dogs, the big cat scores a victory.

I suspect that he was just trapped and then given a new zip code.

I remember when Gov. Perry was out walking with his dog and shot a wolf who threatened them. The looney libs were all up in arms.

According to the article, you are now supposed to talk firmly to the predator and they will just turn right around and run away. You betcha’ bucko - you first.

In large packs. An airedale from hunting lines, one-on-one, would be better equipped to take on a big cat than would a single Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Although the poor man would be very sad about his dog I am sure he would not change places. Having the dog with him may have saved himself from being attacked.

I knew a guy, whose daughter had a pet goat, a kid really. She was walking the thing and a mountain lion jumped out, grabbed the kid (goat), and disappeared.

This was in SE Arizona.

I wonder how he worked around the leash...

Mountain lions go for the internal organs first. I live in lion country and only a mile from my house, once found a collar with tags with the dogs neck bone with some dried skin and fur still inside the collar.

If the man had a real dog (a German Shepherd), the kitty probably would have reconsidered.

Anyone who lives in areas that have mountain lions should know better than to go anywhere alone. I’m sorry to say, they pretty much deserve what is coming to them. Cats are solitary and opportunistic. They won’t do anything that risks themselves getting hurt. If you hike/walk/jog with a friend(s) (or large dog), they won’t attack. Look at all the cases where people have been attacked by mountain lions, they are always alone. A small dog doesn’t count as a friend, that’s just an appetizer.

A gun would be helpful, but that won’t prevent a cat from trying since they probably wouldn’t know what a gun is. You won’t see or hear them coming and they will usually attack from the side or behind. Trusting in a gun means you are trusting that their first strike doesn’t work, which is a huge gamble. You are safer with a large dog or another person (even elderly) than with a gun because the cat will see two large bodies and think it’s too much risk to be worth it.

Now, against wolves or coyotes, that’s where I’d prefer to have a gun. They don’t rely so much on element of surprise and since they hunt in packs, I want a full clip.
