Dean Martin / Johnny Carson 1969 TV
youtube ^

"Dean Martin on the Tonight Show, May 6 1969.

One of the funniest episodes of late-night TV, a snapshot of the anything goes late 60's and Johnny's favorite episode. Dean Martin makes an unexpected appearance and steals the show from Bob Hope. The underrated George Gobel then shows up (in part 2) and unleashes one of the greatest lines of all time. Dean struggles to find an ashtray to the hilarity of all and Johnny is left valiantly trying to hang on to some kind of order and keep the censors happy."

Pretty incredible stuff, booze, cigarettes, comedian super stars, hot chicks, and Johnny Carson holding on for dear life.

I saw that at the time and it was hilarious.

Incredible is right!! Steve Allen and the equally talented Jack Parr ‘passed the torch’ to the all time number one king of late night, in my opinion anyway, Johnny Carson. Okay FReepers, are any of these newer fellas on late night TV today any where close to being in the same league as my ‘big three’? (I don’t believe I have viewed any of the current hosts more than once or twice in many years).

Nah, I gave up on late night TV once Johnny retired. I made sure to watch his last week on the air and hoped he’d make more appearances later, but he didn’t...another part of American life which will never return.

Dean Martin makes an unexpected appearance

You believe that? Ever watched the credits at the end of these shows? Notice the names of "writers". What do you think these writers do, write the credits titles?

I really don’t like Dean Martin, especially when he acts like a drunk. Having grown up with an alcoholic parent, I don’ find it funny.

TV back when celebs could drink and smoke. Check out the dress on Judy Carne. The 60s were the descent of man but they sure had some great entertainers.

The writers helped to write the monologue and the skits. The guests were entirely on their own. I remember some nights where Johnny had a hard time with some of the guests. Anyway, Johnny would ask guests before the show what they might want to talk about (like George’s AFPA jacket) and he used that to keep the conversation going. It was shown on one of his specials how he put his show together every night. Quite different from today where guests just come on to plug something.

Back when people had a sense of humor and everyone wasn’t so eager to be offended.
