The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
Single guys can tape all kinds of engineering type drawings on the wall, and no-one complains.
Of course, my house will never appear in "Better Shacks and Gardens" ;)

I don’t live in the City by choice. My county has almost zero zoning laws, so I live in the county. The subdivision is about a mile outside the city limits.
We don’t have a homeowner’s association. The restrictions were very few in the purchase contract. No noxious animals(they said that was pigs), dogs on a lease or in a pen, house must be 35 ft back from the road, only 1 outbuilding allowed(any size). House must be at least 1300 sq ft. No mobile homes.
Junk is not prohibited. LOL. That means when your junk out grows your out building, you can just stack it out side anywhere.LOL.
Not that I would do that, but just shows how silly some restrictions can be. LOL.
We plan to set up the swimming pool this weekend to catch the spring rains to water the garden. We have new guttering put up so that we can direct the rainwater to the pool from the roof.
Great news about the garden room. I just want one of those connected to my house sooooo bad.LOL
Now don’t that take all? Who knew you needed to have a “trash patrol”? LOL.
LOL. My walls and refrigerator in the basement are so covered with stuff, that I had no place to hang it. I probably had some brainstorm about where to put it, and then forgot what it was and where I stored it.
I’ll be doing some spring cleaning at the end of the month, so maybe it’ll turn up. Some people might say that my desk is messy- I just say “My Desk Backed Up”.
I have a few “off limits” areas upstairs, so that I can get away from the clutter when I need too.
Use 2-4/D (broad leaf herbicide)
Didn’t you get a little snow today?
I filled multiple trash bags with all kinds of junk when we first moved here. Many, many empty alcohol bottles, a large trash container full of salt (for the roads in snow-we actually saved that), a car battery, numerous fast food cups, broken glass, glass bottles, cigarette butts, it was amazing.
Every spring we have new additions to our yard, but never as much as we did when we moved in, thank goodness.
Yes. Around 15 to 18 inches, and we still had as much as 4 inches on the ground in some places. By the end of this month I will be starting seeds on the kitchen table. This will be fun. :)
Good afternoon all. I am new to this thread. Tomorrow my lovely and I will be starting a Square Foot Garden. Can anyone provide some advice for the new gardener?
I am in San Antonio so what is good to plant? When to plant? So many questions, so little time...
Our weekly county newspaper is full of no trespassing or dumping ads. The property is also posted. That way people can be prosecuted if caught.
It was a new concept for me. Never had to worry about that kinda dumping where I grew up.
I'm in Massachusetts, with around two feet of snow still on the ground, but we have gardening aficionados here who live all over the country.
I called the board of health once because of trash blowing into our yard from the property across the street. I had tried to call the place, but no one answered, and there was no answering machine. The board of health was very helpful. I was impressed at their quick response.
I’m new here, too. I’m in the Northern part of Houston. I have two garden spots ready to go. One is around 1200 sq ft and the other is big enough for 12 tomato plants. I’ve got 24 tomato plants that are about to be moved from the garage to the garden. I just made tomato soup with my last package of frozen tomatoes from last year.
In a few days we’ll be setting out some, pepper, squash and cucumber plants. And we’ll be planting some green beans, raddishes and green onions and some cucumber seeds so I can harvest a few weeks longer. I can’t wait to get started! Tomorrow will be the day if it doesn’t rain.
The only advice I can give you is you’ll need to pick your tomatoes when they’re starting to turn pink and let them ripen inside. Otherwise the squirrels and birds will get them. I put up a temporary fence then cover the plants with bird netting. I want them to ripen on the vine.
We get an early start here but our gardens burn up fast, too.
Good luck!
I’d better try something. It’s really spreading!
Thanks.
Snow is gone (wet snow yesterday)....
50 - 60 coming next week...
Do some light garden work this weekend...
Time for serious planning now...
I’m glad it didn’t blow away, too. It’s a nice little set-up, but a friend of mine who lives about 100 miles away said I can come get his for free-—it’s an 8’x12’ greenhouse with all the bells and whistles-—twice as big as the one I’ve got. So I’m going to have to get it. Right now the yard is too wet-—I’d ruin half the lawn trying to get it to the backyard after hauling it. I found a place to rent the trailer I’m going to need to fetch it home.
I’ve always wanted a real greenhouse. This one even has a door that locks. Wow! :>
That’s great! I’ve always wanted a greenhouse, but our land is too wooded and hilly. Good for you!
Welcome. I’m a bit north of you and just came in from putting out tomato and a few pepper transplants I started from seeds. It’s kinda too late to start yours from seeds so get some transplants this year and save seeds for next year. Now is the time to start getting things in the ground. I’ll try to FR-mail you a Zone 8/8b growing guide since it’s really too long for a thread. Check your local agriculture extension office website or stop by their office and they’ll give you lots of free info.
