An Australian Billionaire Is Building A Nearly Exact Replica Of The Titanic
Business Insider ^ | 02/27/2013 | Alex Davies

Last year, rumors popped up that Australian billionaire Clive Palmer was working on cloning a dinosaur.

Whatever happens to those plans, it's clear that Palmer has a taste for recreating the past.

The 58-year-old, who made his fortune from natural resources like coal and iron, is now bringing the world's most famous ship back to life.

In New York on Tuesday, he unveiled images of Titanic II, a replica of the ocean liner that sunk on its maiden voyage in 1912, claiming 1,502 lives.

To offer 21st century cruise-goers the chance to sail on the Titanic, Palmer created the company Blue Star Line last year. The ship is being designed by Finnish company Deltamarin, and will be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, Reuters reported.

While the new Titanic will have air conditioning and modern safety equipment (and enough lifeboats for all its 2,435 passengers and 900 crew), it will be made to look just like the original. Passengers will even be divided into three classes, and will be kept from mingling with those outside their station.

Construction should begin next year, and Palmer hopes to have the ship cruising by 2016. He has not specified how much the project will cost, but says the funds are coming from his own pocket, and that he'll spend what it takes to get the Titanic back on the ocean.

Brittle steel and all?

Who in the world would pay to be abused like that?

I guess it depends on how much they're paying. Plus, it looked like Jack and Rose were having fun in steerage. They had a keg!

Why is a Finnish firm designing the “Titanic?” Wasn’t it designed once, already?

I would have no problem with that. Don't like it, don't go.
You don't sign a contract to change it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the doppelganger of the fated vessel is being built by an Aussie billionaire Clive Palmer in China and will take its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York in 2016.

The ship is supposedly going to look exactly the same, save a few safety upgrades, which means enough lifeboats for people who make under $50,000 a year.

Hmmm, an exact replica being built in a country known for its lax quality-control oversight ... what an unsinkable idea!

Maybe it’s just me, but I saw that picture of graceful curved stairs, and immediately imagined gang banger guys walking down it with their pants hanging low and flat-brimmed Chicago Bulls baseball cap on at an angle.

Cruise ships are built far differently than ocean liners..and for good reason...i.e, you can't have private balconies on the North Atlantic...

Oops, that last pic of the tipped over Costa Concordia doesn’t bode well.

Does the new Titanic come complete with a huge gash in the side?

It does seem kind of silly to have steerage class on a luxury liner today though. People don't book cruises because they have to be somewhere. A hundred years ago, many travelers were looking for the cheapest one-way ticket to America they could find. They weren't taking a vacation.

Another article I read says there will be no television or internet and guests will be required to wear period-era clothing (which will be provided for them). I don't see this endeavor making much of a profit.

I’ve been on a few cruises theses last few years...as I’m retired, I can go at the last minute, and you can get some incredible values..as much as 70% off the price...because an empty cabin is worthless to the cruise line..also, we always take cheapest, inboard cabins..all you do there are the 3 s’ ( sleep, shower, and s**t)..otherwise you’re all over the ship..)..it’s an incredible value..
