WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD VOLUME 8 FEBRUARY 22, 2013
Free Republic | February 22, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 02/22/2013 1:35:16 PM PST by greeneyes

It's a cold, cloudy day with plenty of snow on the ground. Not much good for gardening, but the kind of day when you want to put a stock pot on the back burner, and turn on the oven to bake bread, casseroles, and/or roasts. All to make you warm inside and out.LOL

I have been reviewing some of the heirloom grains this week and need to narrow the list down to 2 or 3 that I will order. Teff and Quinoa are 2 that may make the cut.

I will be planting some crimson clover this week or next as a soil conditioner in a few beds to turn under in April or May. The rest already had winter rye planted last fall.

Have a great weekend. God Bless.

much more shade in the early morning and afternoon than they did when we first moved here

I made the mistake of putting a compost pile under an elm in the back yard, and noticed over the last few years that it was shading more and more of my garden.

Duh! I moved the compost pile, and will sacrifice the tree. It shall be ash and wood chips when I'm done, and make restitution to the garden in it's new form. ;)

I found some olive trees that are supposed to grow well in this zone, so I'll put some of those in, along with some fruit trees.

That’s a good list of crops to grow.

Myself, I am going the opposite. I am going for more containers this year. They will be closer to the house and easier to get from a distance as well as saving the back bending over.

I am thinking about a cover crop for a couple of my beds to renew the soil, and then plant a fall crop and winter crop in those.

I want to reduce what I am doing in July and August to avoid the heat and drought period.

After a non-exhaustive search, it seems the jury is still out on origins of the phrase.

Wickipedia has it as small streams of water flooding, and another site, “ Wicki Answers” has it as the Creek Indians...but that is not final. They both work, and I like the dual imagery!

And here is another which indicates the “Creek don’t rise” originated in the war of 1812.

I’m in zone 6b, in the Ohio Valley to be exact, and I’m thinking about planting sweet potatoes in containers. Anybody do this that wants to share info?

Stupice is supposed to be an easy one - in addition to other attributes.

WOW!!! I was on one of those far left websites when I learned of Free Republic. I said wow because the last thing I was expecting to find here was someone talking about gardening. I need to learn how to post pics here because I garden too!!

That website, whose name I can’t remember because there are many of them, was as you’d expect making fun of Free republic and the people who post here. They were poking fun of an article where a Freeper was writing about dealing with street gangs after the collapse of society.

Like usual that site ‘reproduced’ their own version of the freeper article. They claimed they did that “So that their dear readers would not have to come here and read it themselves” They did provide a link to Free Republic but it was a broken link that did not work. I’m sure that was intentional.

The lefties basically gave me the impression that this place was full of hateful old white men who will soon be dead. They said this place was anti-gay,anti-woman,anti-poor and I don’t need to go further because we have heard it all before.

Even worse than the article was the commenters.

One said that he was a white male teen and that he would be happy when the entire white race died out.

Most made fun of the idea that society might collapse.

Others felt that if society did collapse a few old white men will be easily dealt with. Some felt that taking things from conservatives would be as simple as sticking a gun in their face and telling them to hand it over. They went on to fantasize about old people on their knees begging for their lives.

I posted no replies there myself. I had the feeling that doing so would have given them the excuse to hack me and disrupt my life. People like that are good at shutting down one’s right to free speech. Besides...I’d rather deal with people like that face to face. Give them an education that there are some of us that are full of surprises and won’t do as they want us to do.

They might want to bring a lunch. That could take some time. I spent a lot of my adult life studying war, professionally. ;)

As one of the grumpy old white men on the site, I assure you that we too, garden, and like eating and canning produce from our gardens.

Best if you stay away from the liberal websites. You could catch some kind of nevergetover.

Welcome to the thread. I have a ping list if you want to be added let me know.

As to the lib site:

First I hate calling these people liberals. George Washington and the rest of the founders were the true liberals - believers in individual freedom. I refer to the modern day sites as statist, collective socialists, or run a muck big government types. Course that is a stereo type too so I try to refer to them very little. It never improves your day.

Street Gangs - They are already rampant who needs to wait for societal collapse?

Hateful? If a Freeper says Hello how are you - they are going to call it hateful- so who cares -consider the source.

White Men? Plenty of Women are Freepers. White or Black? Who knows or cares? The computer posts don’t readily tell you that. But we do love our freedome and constitution.

Soon be dead: We are all destined to die sooner or later. The hour and manner of our death is unknown to us or any other mortal.

I am virulently anti-poor. There is too much poverty in the world. Poverty is encouraged by statists such as these people seem to be. I am for everyone moving up. I am for a hand up, but not a hand out.

Just because I am a woman who is married to a man, does not mean that I am anti-woman. I am pro - people - all colors.

The individual(of any orientation) should be talking to his God and his religous advisor about his/her sexual issues including orientation - not bleating about it all over TV and the media.

Some old white men are combat veterans, in good shape, and/or hunters and very good at hitting what they aim at, so I wouldn’t think that particular fantasy would work real well. More likely they will be begging for food, since they seem to think preparation is not necessary.

Now, let’s get back to gardening. What zone are you in and what are you doing this month on your garden - starting seeds, ordering plants etc?

Yes. That will work. It needs to be the < img src="link"> format.

You may just be the person who told me about Stupice. It was someone from New England that advised me about Stupice for an early tomato.

Reminds me of Hubby’s little problem. Twenty five years ago when he picked out his garden site, there was a tiny tree on the south west side.

That tree is now a very tall butternut tree. Between the shade and toxisity from the tree, the plant choices are severely limited. The main thing he wanted to grow was tomatoes and peppers. They won’t grow at all, so he had to put in other garden spots.

No way do we sacrifice the butternut. Every 2-3 years we get a huge crop of nuts. He hulls, cracks, and picks out the meats, and we vacuum freeze them. Our most successful crop - native plant!!!

That would be difficult, if you get a crop off of the tree.

The elm, while sorta pretty if you squint and the light is bad, doesn't shade the house, drops leaves and branches, and threatens the lean-to next to the shop. Besides shades the garden.

It is headed to a footnote in an obscure history book. It's time has come. Hasta la vista, baby.

That choice was fairly easy to make.

I have misplaced an entire plastic bag of seeds. This house isn't that large. I hate losing stuff. It's likely that the entire kitchen is going to get tossed like a crime scene before the night is over until I find them.
