Long-term shifts in the U.S. economy coupled with the recent recession means Americans are more likely to pack up and move for employment-related reasons. Although the total number of residential moves is down, new data shows a clear pattern of the states that people are fleeing the fastest.

How about a middle aged Heavy Metaler? n/s
Uh, oh, South Carolina’s on the high inbound list. Back to getting cut off by cars with New York plates & being asked, “Where do you have to go to get a good egg cream here and point me to the nearest Starbuck’s?”
It was like that in the 1970’s.
But N.C.’s on the list too. That’s a much more liberal state, in fact we call it “Northern Commieland”. The snowbirds will find a much better home there. Try Asheville, Charlotte, or Chapel Hill.
The liberals might avoid Columbia; we’ve still got the Confederate flag in front of the State House.
We're number eight!
We're number eight!
:O(
It is likely economically worse than it appears as population leaving blue states contains a high percentage of (economic) Producers, and is partially offset by population arriving that has a low percentage of Producers.
Thus the economic health of those states is far more seriously eroded than the population shift indicates.
I left the midwest and headed 850 miles southwest over 10 years ago. I will live longer without the 6 month angst of snow and ice. Not to mention the fact that snow shoveling often kills.
Look for folks to do what the old Baltimore Colts did, move during the middle of the night just to avoid that tax.............;)
Advice: put the libralism into the trash with the rest of the garbage at the curb.
I am planning to leave Connecticut. Of course, I was assigned here when I was in Navy. Never really liked it here. High taxes, high home prices, extremely liberal, fewer job opportunities.
“....why is there not an influx of liberals from red states where they are oppressed by us backward hicks?”
Excellent question. Liberals I’ve met in S.C. tend to be highly condescending toward Southerners, that’s a given. If they were in Boston or S.F., they’d be like more coals to Newcastle. Being the enlightened minority surrounded by bigotry & ignorance is a powerful tonic to the liberal ego.
Pragmatically, they know the cost of living is much less in the Southern red states. The climate is milder than Boston or Buffalo. The quality of life is better than L.A.
Again, liberals in the South find their own coteries where they commune, meet in their favorite watering holes & feed their own prejudices, without putting up with all that awful traffic in NYC & Newark.
Au contraire elcid1970. Those of us in NC can’t hold a liberal candle to your fair city of Charleston. Really. NC is NO place for a liberal to relocate.
Charleston area was named both “Top U.S. City” and “Top Destination in the World” by Condé Nast Travelers “2012 Readers’ Choice Awards,” the second consecutive year the historic coastal destination has received the No. 1 U.S. City ranking.[6] In 2011, Charleston was named “#1 U.S. City” by Conde Nast Traveler’s “Readers’ Choice Awards” and “#2 Best City in the U.S. and Canada” by Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Awards”. Also in 2011, Bon Appetit magazine named Husk, located on Queen Street in Charleston, “Best New Restaurant in America.” America’s most-published etiquette expert, Marjabelle Young Stewart, recognized Charleston in 1995 as the “best-mannered” city in the U.S,[7] a claim lent credibility to by the fact that the city has the first established Livability Court in the country. In 2011, Travel and Leisure named Charleston “America’s Sexiest City” as well as “America’s Most Friendly.” Subsequently, Southern Living magazine named Charleston “the most polite and hospitable city in America.” In 2012, Travel and Leisure voted Charleston as the second best-dressed city in America, only behind New York City.
Yep. NC can’t hold a candle to that. Only good ole boys, guns, and Bibles up in here. And junk cars in the front yards. Lots of ‘em.
Oh, dear. Your descriptions of all the awards of Charleston affirm what I have always known: The Holy City really isn’t a part of the rest of South Carolina. Our good ol’ boys with their guns & Bibles are the main reason we don’t have a Muslim problem here; the beard & burka crowd are scared to death of all those armed infidels.
Back to my earlier post: liberals DO like to relocate to N.C. in the enclaves of Asheville, Chapel Hill, Salisbury (I hear) & Charlotte, which I visited monthly when I was a reservist and would love to go back to.
Old joke in S.C.: Why are the Charlestonians like the Chinese? Because they eat rice, worship their ancestors, & speak an almost unintelligible language.
I’m a Columbia native & it’s kind of neat that an exotic foreign place with its own unique culture is but a two hour drive away. There’s a saying among older Charlestonians:
“Why should I travel? I’m already here!”
