The Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO confirmed on Tuesday that there are indeed films in development, in addition to the already announced trilogy of new "Star Wars" entries beginning with Abrams' "Episode VII."
"There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that have been in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few stand-alone films," Iger said on CNBC's "Closing Bell with Maria Bartiromo."
Iger's confirmation of "Star Wars" stand-alone films comes in the middle of new rumors surrounding that galaxy far, far away. On Monday evening, Ain't It Cool News founder Harry Knowles reported that Disney would begin their stand-alone "Star Wars" movies with a film based on the legendary Jedi warrior Yoda. In January, it was reported that "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder was working on a "Star Wars" film loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's classic "Seven Samurai." Snyder's representatives vehemently denied the report; Disney officials have yet to specifically address the Yoda rumors.

I was so disappointed in Episodes I, II, & III that I find it difficult to care about VII, VIII, & IX let alone sideline plots.

Disney didn't spend $4B on the franchise to just sit back and collect residuals.
I've seen this described as a "reverse-Avengers", i.e., start with the ensemble already established, then break down the universe into stories focused on smaller pieces of it. It should work -- Star Wars has a huge fan base and as long as the "one offs" are done moderately well or better, they'll be successful.

I hear in the Christmas special Jar-Jar dies an especially long and horrific death. Really makes you grateful for that.

As long as they don’t destroy all the “history” in the books that take place after the events in Return of the Jedi I’m find with all of it. If they do that a LOT of people are going to be pissed.
To: Secret Agent Man
that would be an awesome gift

I think it's unlikely that they'll go against "canon" -- it's still Lucasfilm beyond the productions, Disney is just the owner now. They're not replacing the creative staff.
On the good news front, though, it's unlikely Lucas will do screenplay or directing. The best of the movies to date (plus the Clone Wars series) has him as a producer and creative consultant, but not a writer or director.

Call me crazy, but considering all the books and animated features based on the franchise, I would not be surprised to see dozens of movies. An entire universe was created. They can tell an unlimited number of stories and only enhance the depth of that fictitious world.
It could be like Dr. Who in the quantity of stories.
