Bang For Your Buck: A Guide To Affordable & Reliable Firearms For Preppers
Survival Blog ^ | 1-24-13 | IK

Rifles Your needs: Hunting, varmint control, “just in case”

Why: While some people may use or need a rifle for home defense, all the rifle owners I know use their rifles for either target shooting or hunting and varmint control. They use a different kind of gun for personal or home defense. However, for the sake of argument let’s say that the proverbial excrement has hit the rotating airfoil and that you, despite the fact that you get your meat from the grocery store and don’t run into coyotes at the bus stop, could be called upon to defend all that is categorically good from all that is categorically bad. In light of this potential situation, you should gravely proclaim to whoever is in charge of your bank account that it is morally incumbent upon you to own a rifle . . . just in case.

While semi-automatics are incredibly popular and effective, a good bolt-action rifle is the most rugged, durable, economical, and time-tested rifle platform available. Remember: this article is for the average person who does not need something like a battle rifle. That being said, my recommendation for a cheap, reliable bolt-action rifle is, in fact, a battle rifle. Oops.

Recommended: Mosin-Nagant 1891/30. Cost: $100

“the SKS uses a stripper clip into a fixed magazine attached to the firearm.”

I still know what you mean. I saw a gun guy on Utube who loaded cartridges from a stripper clip into the fixed magazine. He did that on several different rifles.

I lean toward having a carbine in a pistol caliber and the matching caliber pistol.

If price is no object, I would recommend a Kriss. Otherwise, a Hi-Point carbine.

My friend bought an FNAR rifle two years ago new for $1550 and just sold it this week for $3,000 after putting about 200 rounds through it.

That's a Chinese SKS and a 30 round mag.

I recognize the two thumb technique, though, from the russian SKS and the 10 round magazine.

Easier to treat it like a bolt action that opens the bolt for you after every shot. Hunting feral pigs, anyway.

What I ordered from Cabela’s was 150 Remington Hollow Points for the 22 lr. which I think should be here next week.

I have a Remington rifle and a Remington shotgun and they are too heavy for me but I did buy proper zombie killing ammo for them before this rush for ammo happened. If the SHTF, I expect my son would be here and he can handle those weapons.

“find cases to reload”

True. Up until recently surplus was cheap and easy to find. I bought a few crates, so I am good supply wise. trouble is, most ranges won’t let you shoot steel core ammo anymore.

i do the reloading thing ,,, managed to come across a bag of 50 Remington brass and a box of sierra pro hunter 150 gr. .311 bullets

A lot of the bullets that I use in reloading are getting in short supply. Just trying to supplement the numbers in the inventory, made most of the basic buys years ago.

I've got a 3 mag clamp on this one, the Ruger mags are nearly 100% reliable.

This is one of the early 10-22s, the original wood stock got so banged up riding around in a fiberglass canoe that it wasn't worth refinishing.

No telling how many rounds this one has burned, they just keep on shooting.

The Lee Enfields are hard on brass, the cases are only good for 3 or 4 full power reloads before you get a head separation.

“the original wood stock got so banged up riding around in a fiberglass canoe”

NO! You had it in a canoe AND IT DIDN’T FALL OVERBOARD?? That is a first of the greatest magnitude!

A FIREARM THAT DIDN’T FALL OVERBOARD!!!

“I still want the Ruger company made one.”

The BX-25 is a great mag. I have put many rds thru my 10/22 w/o misfires/fail to load. I have one off brand and have had nothing but trouble with it. It is for sale ... :)

Production will catch up and the BX-25’s will be available again. Same for everything else. I got a 1000 rds of 7.62x39 HP’s a week ago that I ordered after Christmas. Also ordered the 5 mags, 7.62x39 after Christmas, and received those this week.

I bought Aquila Super Max 22lr HP several times last year, and some from Cabela’s when they threw in the ammo box. And btw, I like the Aquila’s...work great in the 10/22 and also in my Ruger Mark I (1950’s vintage)...love it, a great semi-auto.

I saw all this coming, just not as suddenly as Sandy Hook brought it on. I never owned a gun until 18 months ago. Have been around them, used them, hunted, but never owned...no longer true. I am still in buying mode, but not so much pressure.

Btw, just got an email about a poll in USA Today...
Please vote on this gun issue question with USA Today. Then pass the link on to all
The pro-gun folks you know. Hopefully the results will be published later this month.
Here’s what you need to do:
First - vote.
Second - Send it to other folks and we will see if the results get published.
Click to vote:

As of this moment 12.5 million votes, and the YES votes are 97%. We all need to add our votes to this poll.

Most of them don’t do too bad with .308 bullets, easier to find than .311.

You’re correct, but the milsurp corrosive, steel core stuff is still out there for about 20 cents a round, by the case. Can’t reload good brass for that, considering you have to use .303 bullets (.311).

Bought some arsenaled peace-time hex receivers awhile back; be awhile before they wear out and then we’ll make the parts we need.

“...the original wood stock got so banged up riding around in a fiberglass canoe...”

Wow, and you still have it? Hard to believe after all the stories I read here about guns lost in boating accidents! :)

Still cheap as most don’t recognize it as an assault weapon round.

We are our own range around here.

I never dumped one. A friend of mine dropped the magazine tube from his 94-22 and had to go swamp diving in January. He came out almost robin egg blue, that water up under the trees is cold.
