I often see canine leavings at the side of the road, and wonder which of my fellow dog owners left them behind. (It certainly isnt the dogs fault.) In recent years, homeowners associations and apartment complexes have answered this important question by requiring DNA samples from dogs living on the property. When staff find an abandoned pile, they match the DNA it contains to a resident dog, and fine the owner $250.

I don't have a dog, but every time I've walked one I've used a pooper scooper. This article makes some really good points though on why this is a terrible idea for those who have dogs, or those, like me, who occasionally doggy baby sit.

I was not aware that the FBI maintained a canine DNA database.

I’m guessing that in order to match the DNA, owners have had to first supply the Association some of their doggy’s doo doo up front.
Ya know... I can just about see how indeed - some HOA or condo board presidents can get so anal (pun intended) about dog poop as to run around doing DNA analyses.

i wonder who pays for this DNA testing too. The fine is $250 so that probably pays for it.

Yes, it is ridiculous, but we live in a world full of irresponsible people who don't give a da** about other people's health and safety. It's amazing how many Obama voters let their dogs leave calling cards in my driveway. I'd like to see the offenders tarred and feathered.

Homeowners’ associations might be fascist, but how do you qualify someone who lets their dop crap on your lawn?
