An ancient floor which has not seen the light of day for 10,000 years has been uncovered at the Ayia Varvara-Asprokremmos site, the antiquities department said yesterday.
The department said new finds during the latest excavations had redefined the understanding of the kind of human occupation that existed at the Neolithic site in the Nicosia district, which has been radio-carbon dated to between c. 8,800-8,600 BC...
The presence of buried artefacts (usable, but abandoned) and evidence of erosional episodes indicated the punctuated character of the structures occupation, while the nature of the artefacts demonstrated the domestic character of the building, it added.
Constructional features illustrated the significant degree of investment given to the building, including the deeply dished form of the building dug into bedrock and a 10-15 cm thick wall lining.
The department said the latter exhibited significant evidence of burning and was likely constructed of an organic super-structure of branches cemented in place by mud plaster.
It said the finds suggested a decline in the investment applied to the construction of shelters utilised at the site, and a shift towards a more temporary architectural form during later phases of occupation. A large carefully engraved teardrop-shaped picrolite pendant, representing a more developed form of ornament than those recovered previously, was also recovered.

Thanks to all who have joined the GGG list since pinging was suspended, it means a lot. |

10,000 years?
Gosh. They clean less than I do.
Bump
TTIUWOP.
I uncovered my floor this week. Spring cleaning came early or post-holiday cleanup came late.
I went to the story expecting to see the floor.. Guess not.

>>The presence of buried artefacts (usable, but abandoned) and evidence of erosional episodes indicated the punctuated character of the structures occupation<<
If the usable but abandoned artifacts were cleaning supplies and the erosional eposides were dated via Lucky beer caps (with the olde rebuses) and half-played backgammon games then they finally dug out my old college apartment.
... and similar to my floor, it is a 2-foot-deep wasteland of dirty clothes, KFC boxes of stripped chicken bones, diet cola cans, and porn.
I scrubbed my floor with a stiff bristle-brush and Rust-Oleum `acid-etch’ crystals. If they have any priceless mosaics they don’t want this done to, I’m unavailable for a small fee.
and it STILL hasn’t been seen...I searched all over the net for a pic.
Nada.
I couldn't help but notice the paucity of pings lately. Figgered a vacation or sabbatical was a possibility. Have I missed something?
Rather amazing.
Thanks very much, SunkenCiv!
thanks!!!
The software needs to be fixed, it causes double- and triple- pings, and that leads to a steady stream of complaints. The Digest ended late last year for the same reason and at the same time.
Thanks Civ. While I’m here I want to thank you for your efforts on the GGG and other lists. Well done from my perspective. I’ll crawl back under my rock now.
The reason there was no photo, embarrassment — there were piles of used prehistoric pizza boxes. Yes, Laz, and paleoporn.
I have to ask...
Pictures, we need pictures on this thread.
