Agreed the chances of dying from the flu shot are low but this death really sucked. Nice lady. Good family. Then I think of those nurses who were fired in Illinois(?) who refused the flu shot. They don’t make the people coming into the hospital get the flu shot. They’re the ones with the compromised immune systems. Sometimes life ain’t fair. Enough of my rant.

“Then I started taking Vitamin D, and staying at home as much as possible.”

A year ago this month, I went to the doctor for a checkup as I hadn't done anything for myself since my husband was so sick the year before. I was stunned at the results of the blood work. I had practically NO vitamin D in my body. He told me which Vit. D supplement to get at the drug store and I take that little gelcap every day. He said it would take a long time for it to build up.

I'm glad I found that out so something could be done to get it back inside me. I wonder if our age causes D to get low?

“Hubby brings home fresh milk,...”

A few weeks ago, I was out of milk and didn't want to go to the store. I opened a qt. package of instant milk and added some powdered creamer (didn't measure it, just put some in), put in some water and finished it off with some ice cubes so I could get it cold for right then. It tasted exactly like 2% milk, no difference at all. I have big bottles of creamer stored to add to powdered milk. For this flu time, I'll use the powdered milk and creamer to keep from going to store.

I suppose we could call this flu epidemic a “disaster” as I'll have to use emergency supplies until this is over.

I've heard doctors on TV talk about this and the fact the country isn't ready for this. Well, gee whiz, what about a biological/chemical attack? If the medical system can't deal with mega flu, where does that leave us? The answer is, it leaves us to cope on our own.

Why doesn't Hussein work on upgrading medical services to prepare for a medical disaster INSTEAD of trying to take our guns? I suppose he doesn't care if we die but wants to make sure we die without a gun.

Were you spending lots of time indoors? Taking medication to reduce cholesterol? Wearing SPF100 sunblock?

Just trying to think of likely causes. I don’t think age itself causes VitD to drop, but many people spend less time in the sun as they age, and that can do it. Plus, VitD is made from cholesterol, so some medications could have that side effect.

Uncluttered does not compute.

Agreed that people should learn skills now. Too many think that if/when it htf that they will be harvesting their garden, milking their goats, sending out morse code status reports halfway around the world and have their home clad in 6 inch steel in the first week.

I finally got the tomato and pepper seeds started inside to go into the garden this spring. Trying some new varieties this year to see if they will give a me a better harvest what with our heat and drought. Also, put up and baked up the last of the tomatoes from the garden. Air drying some peppers.

I stopped in at the Walmart two towns over and was floored at their high prices. I rarely shop at Walmart and that one maybe once a year. I usually don’t grocery shop but once or twice a month so either that WM was just expensive or prices jumped over the new year. I did buy some little preps like another manual can opener and one box of matches. Strange, they only had one box.

I’m making a list of projects/things to do. Yesterday and today were devoted to rotating the pantry. The freezer is full but it needs to be re-organize it after it got jumbled when a neighbor needed temporary space.

Count me guilty except for the sunblock. Heat destroys me and I stay out of the sun as much as possible. I don't use sunblock because I'm not in the sun. Sun in Texas usually means 100-107 temp. and I'm not going out there.

Yes, I take cholesterol reducing med.

So, guess I'll be taking that Vit. D gelcap the rest of my life.

I debated whether to go to Walmart earlier this week for that very reason but I needed some little things that I couldn’t normally pick up in podunkville. I wiped the buggy, held my breath when passing people (thankfully the store was nearly empty), sanitized my hands and steering wheel. Washed my hands when I got home and washed them again after unloading the car. Went through the bags with and without holes (for the cat) and took the ones with holes straight out to the garbage and washed hands again. Have been taking D-3 and probiotics, etc. Can’t be too careful these days. Did you see that 50% of Laredo was sick?

I do not think he cares whether the citizens die or not. An epidemic to reduce the population especially of the freedom loving independent sort is probably a welcome trend.

We drink skim milk due to cholestrol issues, but I find that if I mix it and put 3 ice cubes in it and shake like crazy, then I am good to go. Hubby on the other hand has to have his fresh milk.

I don’t intend to be counting on any one but myself and family to the largest extent possible. This government is the most unprepared, for anything in my lifetime. They gave up on civil defense more than 20 years ago, when they stopped publishing information regarding surviving fallout, storm shelter/fallout shelter combos etc.

The Kerville hospital can't handle all the flu patients so are sending new patients to Fredericksburg.

It is my understanding they dumped all the MREs or whatever the food stores were in the fallout shelters. I remember when they cleared out the big one here and couldn't believe it. The government's excuse will be that they warned us through the FEMA web page that encourages people to have their own 3 days of preps.

I have started canning the meats that are one sale. Last week we canned chicken breasts. This week will be porkloin chops.

I bought some #10 cans of instant nonfat milk. It worked out to be $3.29 per gallon, which is cheaper than the 4 bucks it costs for fresh. So I’ll use it for cooking, and cocoa mix.

My food preps are generally the same stuff we eat on a regular basis, and on sale, keeping an eye on the use by date.I bought more rice, because I can’t grow it where I live. We don’t eat it that often, because we usually eat taters and beans or cornbread and beans, or some other combo of bread, taters, maters, and beans rather than rice.

I also read that for cooking cakes etc. You can use unflavored gelatin to replace eggs. Also read that vegans use flax seeds instead of eggs. I’ll have to read more on that.

***** “I’m almost finished rotating several brands of older (2005-10) heat & eat soups out of stock, and none have gone bad. Ditto w/ cans of vegetables, fruits, stocks etc. As long as they weren’t dented, rusted and kept dry and cool, they weathered the past 2-8yrs years, just fine. FWIW...” *****

Just did the same with my 2006 ... Tomato Sauce, Salsa, Pineapple, Oranges ... all gone and they leaked on cans underneath and they were starting to rust so I have been eating a bunch of beans lately ... also defrosting my freezer finding stuff I have just plain forgotten.

Anytime I can do a meal that isn’t beans I smile (I really overdid beans in my preps)

Next time I fall into some money I’m buying Rice ... I can eat Rice and Eggs and Onions everyday and those 3 also go with anything I harvest ... Fish, Pig or Deer.

I’m thinking of getting some Minute Rice too so I can build those Meals in a Jar.

TT

Walmart Potatoes individually wrapped at a buck apiece!

(When I was a kid we got potatoes by the truck load and fed them to our pigs... $20) We picked through and snagged the potatoes that weren’t cut or small and usually ended up with 200lbs to 300lbs for the table.

If things ever get to where you can’t get that gelcap any more, maybe see if you can manage 10-20 minutes in the very early morning sun, with as much skin exposed as you feel comfortable with? Just as a backup.

I copied your entire post as it shows what one has to go through to prevent a virus from making you sick. I wish a virus was a colored bit so we could see it (them) in the air and on us.

It's D-3 I am taking also. I have a bottle of probiotics I got a while ago and haven't taken any.

Laredo has that international bridge where people are walking back and forth into and out of Mexico. I'm not surprised 50% of the people are flu stricken and with that many, their medical facilities are bound to be failing. If I were there and thought I had the flu, I'd call the doctor to send a Tamiflu prescription to the drug store and pick it up at the drive in window. I would not go to the doctor at all and he'd probably be glad I didn't. I would do it that way here if I get the flu. Not going into a disease laden doctor's office. Surely, if I don't go anywhere, I won't get it.

I'll tell you what a highly regarded throughout the world, throat doctor, told me. He said straight water is very bad for a sore throat. He said always have something in the water to thicken it, like a cube of bouillon, or drink juice, or drink tea or coffee, not straight water. This fellow is the doctor to many/most opera singers and other singers. Their photos are everywhere in his offices and opera music is playing all the time.

He didn't have liquor in that list to drink, so I guess that one isn't exactly recommended, but it is thicker than water, right? Seems to me a cold beer would be just right and make you feel better, too. Anyway, don't drink straight water if you have a sore throat.

I take D-3 and multi-vits. I just intend to stay inside, except for my bike rides, and I don't meet a lot of folks (like none) when I ride.

Cucumber slushies are amazing on a sore throat. Just peel a few cucumbers and cut into chunks (how small depends on how strong your blender is), add ice and just enough water to blend, and puree. Taste it before deciding to add sugar, if you add too much sugar it’ll taste like an over-ripe honeydew, but if you add just the right amount it will suddenly be the most refreshing thing you’ve ever tasted!

(About half a teaspoon for a quart-sized glass is usually about right for me, but it depends on how sweet the cucumbers are.)

I stumbled on that recipe while working at a call center and shared it with my trainees whenever any of them lost their voice. It works really well.

I think I already had it .. I was down for 3 days and just didn’t want to do squat for 2 more ... no cough, no runny nose... just out of gas and a fever (hot / cold and sweats)

Really hope I already had it .. lost a week of work and there are only 52 weeks in a year and these days you need 66 just to get by.
