how many rounds do you want in your cartridge with:
1 perp
2 perps
3 perps
4 perps
knowing that you might hit each perp with about 1 out of 3 shots taken.
knowing that if you have an AR-15, you are not shooting 30-06, but 5.56
In this day and age, a regular old 1911 just might not be sufficient.
First of all, in a home invasion, I wouldn’t use a carbine anyway. I’d prefer a 12 ga. pump shotgun or a large-caliber wheelgun.
Might have to use my AR-15 Assault Rock like the one that’s currently for auction on Ebay!

Hahahaha....
If it were posted there, I’d vote this one for Best of Craigslist. Wonder if there’s such a thing as “Best of eBay”?
A 12Ga. pump would be my weapon of choice.
I only need to take down one or two; it’s doubtful if the rest would stick around.
That’s why I keep an exra mag in alongside the 1911 at night, with the LED flashlight.
That’s a total of 16 X .45 ACP. Should be adequate.
At that point, if 16 rounds is not enough, something is VERY wrong — I am in a gun fight, not a self-defense scenario.
Even an 870 doesn’t have that many rounds ;-)
Rifle for home defense? Not so much, unless you spot the perps at the edge of the driveway.
Open-choke shotgun for close quarters. Thing to remember: a shotgun still needs to be pointed at your target. One blast will NOT take down people in a 180-degree arc.
Pump-action shotguns usually pack 5 or 6 shells. One per perp.
A cartridge only holds one bullet. Are you mixing up the term with magazine?
Mossberg 12Ga riot gun. Short barrel.
Best home defense. Ever.
Something to consider is the time of day. I’ve been tracking home invasions that have happened locally and most happen in the early evening; between 7:00 and 11:00 with two perps. Hoodlums looking for money for their nightly buzz I think. Be interested in what others have observed in their locales. I’m in a suburban area. Might be different in a rural area.
Where are you going to be at that time of day? How far is it to your gun? Is a round chambered? To be effective, your defense weapons need to be in reach and ready to go boom without making any noise.
Given opportunity, my plan is to take a stealth defensive position and lay in wait so I get the first, and hopefully last shots off.
Have you had the assault rock tested for asbestos, lead, mercury, and mold?
Well, let’s see, I can take out the first three with my Henry Big Boy, have one round left, then pick up my Henry Golden Boy, which the 4th perp can’t tell from my Big Boy, and he runs, or if not I start pumping 16 .22 long rifle cartridges at him.
Right now mine is on my office credenza right behind me. 8 rounds in the mag, plus one in the chamber. 4 Mags right there as well.
You make a good point - be ready anytime for the ‘thief in the night’
Unless you have one of these on your belt:

24 230gr rnds should easily do it. JMO.
No matter how many perps, when the shooting stops I still want to have one full magazine in reserve. Preferable a 30 rounder.
Thoughts on how a confrontation would go down? I get the feeling a lot of folks have in their mind they are going to initiate the confrontation. "Who goes there" if you will. This isn't price negotiation where who goes first loses. In home defense, who goes first is going to win the majority of the time. I also have a feeling if an invasion ever happens to any of us, most (me included) will be so scared shitless we might be lucky to hit the other side of the room.
I’ve been advised - and considered - a cut down or child’s 20ga shotgun is the ideal home defense weapon for CQB - mainly because it packs enough punch to down a perp, but also it is shorter, less wieldy, and won’t blow huge holes in the walls and maybe accidentally kill the spouse or kids.....
I have a friend that is a dedicated gun enthusiast with plenty of range time. When he was robbed and beat up, he managed three shots at the prep and missed.

I would want it to fully accessorized.
