The saying is along the same lines of heston saying “I’ll give you my gun when you pry (or take) it from my cold, dead hands”...
The primary reason to own a firearm is to exercise our 2A right to defend against a tyrannical government. All other reasons should be considered secondary to maintaining liberty.
I’m aware of the Act as our Town had a militia at one point. There are many facets to its’ implementation and it wasn’t realistic. We had a small area where arms were kept but not until about 1830.....and not everyopne was required to “be there”. There were many exemptions...and there were also benefits.
We had Rochambeau and Lafayette
My top two reasons:
One, it is my right, I choose to exercise it.
Two, it p*sses off liberals, would be gun-grabbers, and fascists. (but I repeat myself)
Excellent article. Copied parts of it to my “arsenal” for future reference.
The Second Amendment refers to the right of the people —it assumes the right is already there and establishes protections for it.
Because government does not grant rights, it cannot take them away no matter WHAT opinion makers in the NY Times opine or screeching pols like Diane Feinswine, Rahm or anyone else says.
Right. The 2A recognizes that the right is inherent in “the people,” and then supposes that the people will form into a well-regulated militia in order to secure their free State. Which it did, and will again.
No problem. I just borrowed from someone else. Share on!
Poor writing + caffeine deficiency = jacked results!
“Spartans held Thermopylae for three days, they were ultimately annihilated.”
They knew they would be annihilated, it was a suicide mission. They purchased time for Athenian navy to deploy and for the rest of the Greek city-states to prepare, and the example of their resistance to the point of death inspired the rest of the Greeks to overcome the Persians.
Because the 300 Spartans, and their allies, resisted even while knowing they would be annihilated, their families back home were not annihilated or enslaved to the Persians. They demonstrated that when free men are willing to lose their lives before their freedom, tyrants will not win.

I thought he did a rather nice job of explaining two of the reasons the Second Amendment is VERY important to maintaining our FReedoms and our FRee Republic.
Keep in mind that if it were not for #2, none of the other Amendments would be in force today.
Perhaps some Thomas Jefferson quotes would be appropriate at this point:
When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Does the government fear us? Or do we fear the government? When the people fear the government, tyranny has found victory. The federal government is our servant, not our master!
It is up to us to cause ALL government poobahs to understand these truisms.
WOW! Now, that is preparation!
Hope all is well with you and yours.
I am hoping and praying that ALL (most?) of our Oath Takers will be Oath Keepers as opposed to Oath Breakers.
Their oath is to the Constitution, not to the poobahs!
ping - why have a gun?
I am willing to bet that gunpowder was stored there, but not individual arms. Back then, there was no such thing as smokeless powder and it was dangerous to store large quantities in a home. Often times, militias would also have firearms for those that were unable to afford their own weapons. Those are likely to be they type of arms stored centrally, and artillery if they had any.
Because of the 16th Amendment, and the [abuse of the] Commerce Clause, we are slaves.
We must work for our master [government] and our master can force us to buy from the "company store" [obamacare], or take away that which he so generously allowed us to keep [private property] via confiscation/arrest.
Thank you darling SG...back atcha. Much health and happiness in the New Year. :)
