Today is my "Going Galt" day as I retired in preparation of moving to the retreat in the mountains. To wash the taste of work and DC out of my mouth and to bask in the atmosphere of good vibes I decided to go to the 1000-table gun show at the Dulles Expo center about 15 miles from DC.
As I approached the neighborhood, traffic was so heavy I could hardly even get off the highway, "No biggie," sez I as it was Friday afternoon. As I approached the Expo Center I saw a different truth, that it was traffic to the gun show that caused the gridlock.
I have never before been to a big gun show where not only was there no parking to be had, but there was gridlock in the parking lot and I wound up parking a couple shopping centers away.
The came the entry lines. There were two lines snaking around the huge hall all the way around to the back, essentially four blocks long. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands of people in line and it took ONE HOUR to get inside. Once inside, there was virtually no moving around as the crowd was so huge there was almost no floor space available for walking.
ARs were flying out of there, and it seemed like the floor price level was in the $2600 range, with some tricked out versions going for close to $5k. Ammo was plentiful but price was up about %50 from the last time I bought any. And guys were wheeling out hand trucks of it.
The dealers were saying that today was nothing compared to what they expect tomorrow. One reloading supplier told me he expects to have virtually no inventory to pack up and haul home at the end of Sunday.
Yep, Barack Hussein Obamao is the nation's #1 gun salesman for the fifth year in a row.
Now, back to "Going Galt."
Surely there were hundreds of shooting deaths with such a critical mass of firearms and people. Did the media cover it up?
Hey, CrazyIvan, I haven’t heard from you in a coon’s age. Where you been?
I've been to some really big gunshows, but never anything like this.
Did you see the protestors, dressed in pink, and chanting, “Ban assault weapons today!”
I got 1,000 round of 9mm for 23 cents per round. In July it was 21 cents each. Not bad.
I got 500 .45 cal for .34 cents each, again, not bad.
I have been going to that show for 10 years and have never once waited in line for even 10 seconds. This was truly amazing.
Will O be calling in tens of thousands of UN troops to round up all of these weapons, or will he be using Homeland Security brownshirts?
I LOVE this show. This time, however, I didn’t see a single full auto Thompson... I usually see five or six. Very little full auto of any type this time. Don’t know why. The things you see there.... A guy had an Enigma machine once for $10,000. Another guy had a box of Herman Goering’s personal cigars, crest and all, for $2,000. A guy had a GE gatling gun for $250,000. A guy had a WWII German Field Marshall’s baton for (I think) $16,000. A GREAT SHOW.
Makes me feel so good when I read this sort of thing.
How are the prices on the pistols and rifles? I’m going there tomorrow. I’ve never been to a gun show before.
Dang. We were thinking of going this weekend, but not sure we can fend off those sort of crowds. We go to this one pretty regularly.
You can definitely get a good deal, but it’s the old legwork thing... A LOT of the deals are NOT as good as you can get elsewhere. I was very pleased to get a S&W 4506 in pristine condition for $400 2 years ago.
I just came from my local gun store which is probably the biggest one in N Alabama and it was wall to wall people. I didn’t own a gun before tonight but have had a concealed carry permit for awhile lol. I was intending to by a Bushmaster M4 but they were sold out of everything even closely resembling that. They were also sold out of most pistals also but I did manage to get a Smith & Wesson SDVE 9 mm which was cheap, but has descent reviews. I bought 100 rounds of Remington 115 grain jacketed hollow point for 0.40 a round so your price was better than mine.
Are you series??
I have a feeling that a new assault weapons ban isn't as inevitable as it first seemed. A lot has changed since DiFi’s first crack at it in ‘94.
For one, 49 of the 50 states now have some form of concealed carry, and the modern sporting rifle (otherwise known as the AR) has been the single most popular type of rifle sold in the past 5 years.
Call your congresscritter and voice your displeasure at any potential gun or magazine ban.
Good luck with your *going Galt*!
We were in Cabela’s last week. The wait for permit approval was well over 2 hours. The store had set up rows and rows of folding chairs [it looked much like the DMV] and they were serving complimentary coffee to folks waiting.
It was inspiring. Wish there was a way to poll the people on how they voted, among the customers.
This can not be possible. All I see on tee vee is weapons being turned into local authorities, tables full of them displayed neatly, mostly those awful ASSAULT RIFLES & HANDGUNS. I see nothing like you describe in the’news’. There is a gun show in Melbourne, FL tomorrow. I’m going to go over there to confirm your story. This is a regular show that normally overflows the parking lot - we shall see if what you witnessed repeats here tomorrow (I don’t need to attend the show, I’m good).
Back when Carl Rowan (extreme liberal journalist) shot a kid that was skinny dipping in the pool behind his DC house (with an illegal gun there), someone came up with a cartoon that showed a bunch of NRA guys carrying him overhead, as if he was their Super Bowl winning coach. Rowan was then shown screaming “...I SAID PUT ME DOWN!!!”.
Likewise, perhaps another cartoon where we replace Rowan with Obama and the NRA with “Gun Manufacturers”?
Will O be calling in tens of thousands of UN troops to round up all of these weapons, or will he be using Homeland Security brownshirts?
Doesn’t need furriners.
5,000 regular troops could paralyze America. Just set them up at selected choke points on the Interstate highway system.
36 hours later, supermarket shelves would be empty.
24 hours after that, Tea Party people and just about everybody else would be peeing their pants and begging for mercy.
Just sayin.
If done right, it would take a lot less than most people realize.
This is indicative of a huge cultural movement and the GOP is totally missing out on it.
