The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Isn’t that pretty! I love your screen house.
Gorgeous photos! What part of VA?
I’ve been in Texas over 20 years and still miss the snow. Today is nice and cooool, about 47 degrees with a bit of wind. NICE! I’m ready to order some seeds, and ready to plant. I’ve found some styrofoam containters on the road. I’ve picked them up, washed them out, put holes in the bottoms, put holes in the tops then glued the tops to the bottom, for more insulation?, can’t waste the tops. So far I’ve found 4. I’ve begun getting my raised gardens ready for early, early spring planting. I’ve found some bulbs in one, that I’d forgetten..will put them next to the garden shed.
Thank you! It was 24 degrees here this morning, which is not terribly cold.
What kind of soil do you have already? When I lived in the SW area of Houston, we had a lot of gumbo. We had to mix sand in it to “lighten” it for anything to grow. It’s been years and years, but I remember having loads of sand delivered just to get a good foundation for the grass. And more sand mixed into the flower beds. And peat moss. And vermiculite.
The other soil around there that I remember is kaliche, but I didn’t have that, so I don’t know how to handle it. Link up with a garden club, and they will help you.
You can build a raised bed right on your ground and fill it and go from there. THe roots will eventually mix your additions with what’s underneath. You can make it go faster by turning what’s underneath first and then building the bed on top.
We have some daffodils coming up in a pot that I left on a table on the deck all summer and fall. I have them in a south facing window, and they look terrific, although they are yet to form flowers. We have months before we can start seeds. I have a bunch of years old leftover packets, and I'd like to give them a try. It may be interesting to see how well they do.

Blue Ridge Mountains .... this was taken at Afton where I-64 crosses.
It’s obvious why they call them “Blue Ridge”. Gorgeous.
I have a daughter, SIL, and grandchildren living in Glen Allen. My ancestors settled in Jamestowne (1st or 2nd Supply) in 1608 and then later in Charlotte Court House before they moved west after the Revolution. Otherwise, I know nothing of VA, except for the touristy stuff. Beautiful State.
Thank you for the ping, greeneyes.
That’s a wonderful link! I think I’m going to try that.
We’ve had 2 1/2 feet of snow over the last ten days, but it’s to be expected in Ontario at the end of Dec.
Happy New Year!
I guess that Rita is legend on the thread now. LOL
I didn't think that we had any news this week, but I found a hot pepper growing on one of the plants in containers that are on the back porch for the winter.
It is almost time to start seeds for us, about Jan 15th or so. I suppose I should get busy looking over what we have on hand and making some decisions.
We used “untreated” cedar 6X2X8’s to make frames approx. 4X8’, (just use deck screws for the corners), dug the lawn and assorted rocks out of the base. We placed the frame over the bed. We made 4, and filled two with good soil and compost, and filled two with a mix of vermiculite, peat moss, and compost. I am happy with both types so far.
Those stabilize the whole thing.
See them better here in a picture taken the second year.
Nice! Good looking dog, too.
What do you know about Lingenberries? I understand that they are grown in Canada (as well as Sweden, Norway, and Washington State.)
I had Lingenberry Crepes for lunch, and I’m really hot for Lingenberries. If you look them up on the Web, they grow on a really cute little bush that you can train into an 18” hedge. Much prettier than plain old boxwood.
I live on the northernmost edge of the greater Houston area in Conroe. I you are anywhere near me, feel free to FReep mail me and I will give you some names and places for seeds and other stuff.
When do you typically get to transplant them outside?
I had a small order that I received from Bakers Creek Seeds, because they sent their catalog way earlier than the others.
Probably won’t have time to really get to it until next week or so.
This is the time of year that I am glad I don’t have chickens LOL. Otherwise I would love it. This is the kind of weather where I like to have a fire in the fireplace, and I like to stay in the chair right next to it.LOL
Snow is a great mulch!
Texas weather and Missouri weather have some things in common. Lots of changes. LOL.
Nice winter time scene. Thanks for the pic.
