Jack Reacher Movie Reviews
Multiple | December 21, 2012

Posted on 12/21/2012 11:41:44 AM PST by EveningStar

The previous Jack Reacher threads are quite informative and can be found by clicking on the jackreacher keyword.

For those of you who are new to this discussion, 5'7" Tom Cruise used his influence to land the role to play author Lee Child's 6'5" anti-hero, Jack Reacher (Cruise is also a producer). Lee Child is OK with this. He says Cruise is a great actor and Reacher's size is a metaphor for an unstoppable force. Whatever.

I've watched the trailers and I don't see Jack Reacher, I see Tom Cruise.

Keep in mind that the majority of the people who will see this movie have never read or probably even heard of the books.

Anyway, the movie, based on the novel One Shot, goes into general release today. The reviews are coming in and they are mixed.

The Movie idea with Cruise is stupid. Also don’t support this writer in any way. I have read many of his Reacher books and he writes well until his Liberal bias gets in the way. Then he preaches against the US. The US Military, Guns. Texas. All things I love. I had to put them down. I love the Reacher guy right up until I just could not take it anymore. The Author is a huge Lib socialist and I would not give him a dime of my money.

Number 42?

Wow. The list was smaller. I think I am 1st on the list for One Shot. Probably will have it next week. The only copy in the Los Angeles Public Library for the first book in the series was at the central library. I am number 4 for it. Probably will take a month.

Anyway, I think there are 17 in the series so far. The author said he liked the choice of Tom Cruise for the part.

That is ok because I did not see the other threads. I have the books on my iPad. I will not be seeing the movie.

This reminds me of when Cruise used his influence to get the vampire Lestat role. Initially, Ann Rice was vocally opposed to the idea, but then made a public about face. Money talks...

I’ve got all the Lee Child books and Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher.

Don’t you think that whatever movie Tom Cruise is in, people see Tom Cruise, not his character? In the MI movies, I was only vaguely aware of “Ethan Hunt” but always aware that it was Tom Cruise on the screen.

I've heard the same thing said about John Wayne, Cary Grant or a number of other stars. You may or may not like Tom Cruise but there's no doubt he's a genuine Movie Star, not just an actor.

I think Tom Cruise is great at what he does. I couldn't care less about his personal life, religion or height.

Sorry he's ruined this movie for you all, but I'm more interested in seeing it because he's involved. Jason Statham is the only other actor mentioned here who would have piqued my interest in the film.

I would’ve like to see David Morse as Reacher. He’s a little older than the character, but he’s a heck of an actor.

Those of us of a certain age will unfortunately remember when Dean Martin played "Matt Helm" in "The Wrecking Crew." It was soooooo bad it was somewhat campy..Deano could do that.

Unfortunately Cruise is no Dean Martin. I suspect this will end badly..

There was another good book titled “Point Of Impact” about a former Vietnam sniper. The movie titled “Shooter” was an unimaginable mess.

I stopped reading the Reacher books because of the author shoving his politics and other biases into the series. There were minor things that annoyed me a little in the early Reacher novels, but Nothing to Lose was so blatant that I just can’t stomach any more of Lee Child’s fiction.

I agree. I loved them and so did my son until we got to “Echo Burning” and it got pretty bad on Texas and us bad white Texans killing poor illigal mexicans for sport. My son stopped there but I went on until I got to the end of “Nothing To Lose” and what he was putting on the Military and Could not even finish the last few pages. that was 4 months ago and still have not finished it. I’m done.

The fact that the author is British and writing about the US military raised an eyebrow for me.

I agree, Reacher seemed like a conservative, mostly, until “Echo Burning” and it was as if the author was tryng to kill off the character by making him the opposite of what we thought he was.
Reacher would be a guy who didn't stand out in a crowd like Cruise or do things that drew attention. Some guy would fall over and the crowd would never know that the bad guy had been sucker punched by Reacher. Somebody like Frank Lovejoy would be more like it...

Yeah, Echo Burning was another book that irritated me, but the novels immediately after that one seemed to be back to normal until Nothing to Lose. I really enjoyed the series until I didn’t. Reacher was a great character.

I’ve been wondering if the MP would have had a physical requirement during the time period that Reacher would have served. Would Cruise have been too short to even become an MP in Reacher’s time? According to Wikipedia, Jack Reacher was born in 1960, so he is no youngster and pre-PC requirements might have been in effect.

I think of an Adam Baldwin type when I think of Jack Reacher.

I'm not bothered by his personal life and religion either, but after reading the books, I am bothered by his size.

However, he did do a fine job playing a cold-blooded executioner in Collateral, and Reacher is pretty cold-blooded.
