To Deirdre and Charles Wright, their 4-year-old Newfoundland named Rosie was a member of the family a big, hairy, doe-eyed friend and companion who "aided in their enjoyment of life, well-being, personal development and daily activities."
To the trio of Des Moines police officers who confronted the barking bear-of-a-dog in the driveway of the Wrights' home two years ago, she was something else entirely.
"He doesn't want me to get very close," one of the officers is heard saying on an audio recording from a patrol cruiser's dashboard camera, the deep bark of the dog in the background.
-snip-
"He doesn't want to play," one officer is heard commenting. About a minute later, another officer says, "I'll shoot him. Let's just go shoot him," according to the lawsuit and dash-camera audio.

“Some druggie mad at the mayor said he had dope.”
And yet, LEOs still insist “criminal informants are reliable sources of information” and persist in using them (and claim to be STUNNED, STUNNED when the information turns out to be, in fact, falsified.
If only more officers would use that trick.
I will sign that petition.
THis has gotten totally out of line. These guys think thye can shoot anyone or anything and walk away. If they loose in court, the taxpayers pick up the bill.
We need civilian review boards - NOW.
We don’t want these “COWARDS” as police officers. They are afraid of “DOGS”???? What if they came in contact with a dangerous criminal?
I was a residential plumber for over 30 years. I have been to, somewhere in the neighborhood, of 15,000 homes. Many had dogs. Many owners were not home. In all that time I was only bitten, I mean nipped, twice by an ankle biters while the owners stood right there. (Beware Poodles! Shoot on sight!)
I only felt in danger to the point I would have to defend myself, twice. Once a chained dog went berserk every time I passed him. Had he broken the chain, I was sure he would attack me as he was in a frenzy. It didn’t, he didn’t.
The other time, a neighbors dog came charging across the empty lot between the houses. He was at full speed. It didn’t look like he was going to stop. I expected him to jump for my throat when he reached me. I dropped my tools except for the 18” pipe wrench I was carrying. I was preparing to time my swing with his launch and hit him in the head with all my strength, probably killing him. At the last second, the owner whistled for the dog and he stopped dead in his tracks and returned home.
Was he actually going to jump for my throat? I don’t know. He did show me that he could stop on a dime. Maybe he was trying to scare me (it worked) and would stop short of me and just bark.
First of all it’s a DOG! It’s not a bear. It’s not a wolf. These are GROWN MEN who are so afraid of being “bitten” by a dog, that they shoot people’s pets first and ask questions later.
In all the cases I have seen, the dogs were NOT attacking, only protecting/defending, as dogs are wired to do.
Agree. We're only hearing a fraction of these cases...
2 Investigates: Nearly 100 dogs shot by metro police since 2010 (Atlanta)
A guy who lived across the street from my parent's house on Detroit's East Side had a great dane that he used to occasionally leave in the back yard when he left for work in his Sears appliance repair van, leaving his old car in the front driveway.
About a half hour before the guy returned from work, the dog would casually jump the fence and jump onto the car and lie on the front hood waiting for him......It was hilarious to see this.
Which do today’s cops love more? Shooting dogs or eating doughnuts?
Throw the dog a doughnut ever now and then.
It earns it.
If the cops had no reason to approach the dog, it would not have pursued them. If the dog perceived that the cops were a threat to it's family, it would have stood it's ground and just barked.
Unless the dog was foaming at the mouth or acting erratically, there was no reason to kill the animal.
This is sad.
Yes.
Read the article.
So they tasered the animal???
I guess that might have caused the dog to have an edge.
Really, what did they think was going to happen?
It is amazing that anyone could be so clueless.
Why would any one want to degrade and insult pigs that way.
When a pig kills something it is usually to eat it; they don’t just kill for pleasure or even worse “bragging rights”, only a very stupid cop would do that.
I did not read the article but if what you just said is accurate, these cops and their entire family and relations need to be taken out of the gene pool immediately.
Trying to taser a Newfoundland is about the most ultimately stupid thing I have ever heard of.
Newfoundlands have a coat and under coat that is about 4 or 5 inches thick and as dense as baled cotton. Fire or execute these idiots for gross stupidity if nothing else.
What burns me is that dog behaviour is learnable, as is how to avoid problems with all but the most aggressive dogs. Yet we still hear of these incredibly stupid and cruel acts. These guys are supposed to be experts in dealing with irrational thugs and yet they are clueless when it comes to a dog?
Should cops spend maybe a fraction of their time on this? Or, at the least, told to walk away and call someone capable?
I have never heard of tasering as a way to control an animal. Any animal.
If the cops were unsure of how to handle the animal, they could have monitored the animal and only intervened if it became obvious that the dog was a threat to another human.
Meanwhile a call should have been made to someone who knew how to handle such dogs and wait for their arrival.
Am I the only one? Why don’t cops carry dog treats in case they run across an animal that is obviously out of place?
