If the cops had no reason to approach the dog, it would not have pursued them. If the dog perceived that the cops were a threat to it's family, it would have stood it's ground and just barked.
Unless the dog was foaming at the mouth or acting erratically, there was no reason to kill the animal.

It is amazing that anyone could be so clueless.
What burns me is that dog behaviour is learnable, as is how to avoid problems with all but the most aggressive dogs. Yet we still hear of these incredibly stupid and cruel acts. These guys are supposed to be experts in dealing with irrational thugs and yet they are clueless when it comes to a dog?
Should cops spend maybe a fraction of their time on this? Or, at the least, told to walk away and call someone capable?
