On the night before Thanksgiving, people filled a small ice cream shop in the East Village.
Some had come to the shop, Stogo, because they had read the news on Twitter. Others heard it from the cashier, and their reactions were uniform: No!
Stogo, which makes organic, vegan, gluten-free ice cream, will close on Sunday, a few days shy of its fourth anniversary. It has struggled to pay rent for some time, but Hurricane Sandy made recovery impossible, said Junie Ishimori, one of the owners who helped start the business in December 2008.
This is way more important than Twinkies, one customer declared in reference to the bankruptcy of Hostess brands.
The stores name is short for soy to go, though Stogo also uses coconut and hemp. The stores owners were all vegan or lactose intolerant, Ms. Ishimori said, and Stogo stopped using gluten and peanuts about three years ago.
Irena Azovsky, 22, one of Stogos nine employees, said that the staff knew regular customers names and dietary restrictions, and that people went to the store just to say hello.
It has a not-city vibe, said Leah Evans, 24, another employee.
Ms. Ishimori would not say how much the stores rent was, but it is hardly the only small business that has struggled to stay afloat in high-priced Manhattan neighborhoods.
Stogo, which is on Second Avenue, couldnt pay Octobers rent when it came due, but the month brought higher-than-expected sales. We were starting to say, O.K., we can probably pay this and that, Ms. Ishimori said. Then Sandy hit.

I’ve had meatloafs with higher IQs than 93% of all lib-dem idiots.
Maybe they should look at the POS in the WH and our do nothing silent Congress.
You can’t spell “fade” without “fad”.
Exactly, unionize, get a government grant and file for bankruptcy like any other green liberal entrepreneur selling products nobody wants or needs! ;-)
I have an idea! Let’s stake our futures on the ideologically and metabolically unstable!
I've noticed that--wheat allergies, lactose intolerance, peanut allergies...And it occurred to me that these may be related to the fact that close to 75 percent of products on grocery store shelves now contain at least one genetically modified ingredient. It's possible that the body sees the foreign proteins in genetically modified foods as "invaders," triggering an inflammatory attack that manifests as an allergic reaction. All of those people are not just imagining their allergies. Who would voluntarily create that kind of complication in their lives?
They weren’t making a go of it and had struggled to make the rent for a while, but hey, blame it on Sandy rather than admit it was a dumb idea for a business.
“Cows have been bred to be dumber than the average Democrat”
I’d have to ask for proof of that. I think you made it up.
Do they still make Melorine?
Yep... I think I might write a parody-satire of this one
lol
lol.
Very true.

(Associated Posers) -EAST VILLAGE, New York City-The shop was called “Stogo” which meant “Soy To Go”. They made ice cream out of all natural, non-dairy, gluten-free ingredients like soy and hemp. The store location was on fashionable Second Avenue in the East Village.
“We are all lactose intolerant and vegan” said customer Diega Rodriguez “I’m sad to see it go, I just don’t see how it failed really”
Owner Juni Ishimori wouldn’t admit to how much the rent is in the high-rent neighborhood but said that sales were up before Sandy hit. “That pretty much killed the business” she said “Customers just stopped coming”.
October was a good month, with higher than expected sales, but the shop still could not afford to pay the rent. “Sandy was the last nail in the coffin” Ishimori admitted. So, no more Soycolate Toffee Deluxe, no more Hempside Hammer, no more Melamine-Free Melon Cream, Milkless Berry Boobs and no more No Nut Nutty Nabobs for the customers.
“Often customers would just come by to say hello” Junie Ishimori said, trying to look cheerful but with a look that expressed the idea that saying hello didn’t add a penny to the bottom line. “My back up plan is a lesbian coffee shop in the Bronx” she said “We won’t charge, we’ll let the customers decide how much it was worth”
“This is much more important than Twinkies” she said “I just don’t understand how we could fail. We got huge debts, haven’t the politicians always said that debt creates jobs? Well, here are nine more jobs that vanished. Apparently spending money you don’t have isn’t very stimulating at all”
After catching her breath she decides to take a different tack. “I blame Sandy. Sure we couldn’t pay the rent in October, sure it made no sense to have nine employees with my customer base, but I’ll blame the storm if anyone asks. I’ll not sound unpatriotic to President Obama.”
People are people. Cows are cows. They have one purpose in life - to give milk. Now pigs are something else. They have two purposes, one to provide food and the other to drive the Mussies crazy.
I got dozens of them at the blog...
Celiac disease (or celiac sprue).
It's an assumption that because a particular food is bad for some people, it's bad for everyone. In the case of gluten, there is o scientific basis for that belief, but I think the belief comes from a more basic instinct. My hypothesis is that back during evolutionary times, people who saw another person eat something and become ill would have a better chance of survival if they would avoid eating the same thing themselves. The concept is valid, if you're talking mistletoe berries... but with things like sugar, gluten, etc., the fact that some people cannot tolerate those ingredients does not equate to a universal intolerance.
Maybe half of 1% of store closure reports mention an actual number of jobs lost.
Thanks!
Why do vegans avoid dairy?
Nothing died to make ice cream...
That is good guess. Sorry for late reply.
