Heads I Win, Tails You Lose

In the days since the Paroxysm of National Suicide, a/k/a THE ELECTION!, I have had the opportunity to engage several Obama voters in fairly pleasant and light hearted conversations (don’t laugh, I can be cheerily banal when I want) regarding the future. I did not know any of the conversants, but spoke to them as they waited with me in restaurants, hotel lobbies, gas stations, etc. I made sure to ask only folks with similar demographics to my own so as not to invoke hostility, and I was really polite and cheery when engaging them.

I began by asking the honest, good natured question, “What do you think Obama’s reelection and the strong Democrat showing will mean for the country’s future?”

To distill their answers down, they basically amounted to versions of “Unicorns will poop jelly beans and I will become younger, richer, and prettier!” The environment will improve. Health care will become more widely available and more affordable. Employment will increase. Thanks to the green revolution energy will be cheap and non-polluting and plentiful. The rich will finally be punished and pay their fair share and the government budget would be balanced. World peace would become more apparent. Prosperity will abound. In short, every possible metric of life on Earth would be better.

After they gave their glorious vision I replied that, “Yes indeed these would all be wonderful outcomes. But what if after four years things were not this way, what then?” I asked.

The uniformity and vehemence of the responses to that query were noteworthy. In every case it was a variant of “If things get worse it will be only because racist Republicans stopped him from doing all the wonderful things he wants to do!”

All of them were convinced that Obama is gifted with divine-like wisdom and powers, and if he does not succeed it is because the distilled evil that is conservatism or Republicanism has foiled him. No other reason is possible, especially the Administration’s malevolent knuckleheadery. Thus they have a perfect psychological salve. Four years from now when in fact every possible metric of life in America is worse, it will never be worth considering that Obama is a lazy grifter with totalitarian impulses who surrounds himself with Marxist thugs, it will be because evil racists have stopped him.

Heads I win, tails you lose.

Would it be that Christians and conservatives could hold their faith so deeply.

This kind of anti-cognizance by the majority explains why we cannot win. You can not reason or inform a person away from any position that reason and information did not lead them to hold.

With Repubs like Boehner and McConnell... They got nothing to worry about.

Didn’t Obama have a Democratic majority in both the House and Senate the first two years of his term? The 111th Congress, I believe?

liberalism doesn’t promise any of those things, of course

Obama even promised skyrocketing energy prices under his plan

Unless you did this for the pure entertainment value, you do know that this time will be forever wasted and not returnable.

I’m not sure you’re going to get a straight answer in a gas station in front of other people. It’s like walking up to a group of New York Jets fans and asking them who they think is the best team. They may think the Jets will lose, but they’ll tell you that the Jets are going to win.

The problem is a majority of Americans still WANT to like Obama. It is very difficult to defeat someone when the population WANTS to like them. Because of this desire to keep supporting Hussein, many thinking people will overlook all of his failures or blame them on other factors. It is much like battered spouse syndrome.

Obama is a cult of personality that fits perfectly with our star struck, celebrity crazed, realityTV culture. Leading up to this election many people here and in other conservative circles seemed incapable of understanding just how popular Obama really is. The man is a great orator, comes across as a happy warrior, and is incredibly capable of winning over the public with razzle dazzle. This is just going to have to play itself out. It is possible Obama will be popular for years to come just like Clinton is.

Arguing with a progressive is like arguing with a fence post!

“Arguing with a progressive is like arguing with a fence post!”

The fence post would win any argument with a progressive.

Which is why I predict we’ll win just as big in 2014 as we did in 2010. Obama is Republicans’ Vietnam. We need to learn the lesson of Vietnam...stay out of Vietnam. When was the last time the presidential candidate who was LESS charismatic, likable and emotionally appealing WON a presidential election? It doesn’t happen. The swing voters decide presidential elections and they are so ignorant on the issues that those are the qualities that matter to them.

These grand discussions about the party “reflecting on itself” are just nonsense. Unless we’re talking about reflecting on how to demote the poor strategists who pushed Romney on us during the primary. Finding a way to stop stupid people from voting might be a good thing to brainstorm on too.

I read in a book there would come a time of “strong delusion”. Not saying we are there but it sure seems that it is possible that folks can be severely delusional in large groups.

Agreed, which is why I refrained from arguing and simply gathered information. I have no expectation of persuading them, and in fact have come to realize the futility of persuasion in pretty much any venue of life. People can change their minds, but they cannot be made to change their minds. it will indeed be interesting as the increasing pain in the future has any effect on them, or if they will simply remain delusional as their foolish ineptitude results in their deteriorating lives.

Love it! And my experience exactly.

I can describe interactions with Democrates but can’t fathom and explain how they can be so delusional.
