If you aren’t Mormon, don’t move to Idaho...you won’t fit in.

Check out Traveler’s Rest, South Carolina. The culture you want, and much better climate than the mountains of Montana.

You might also investigate Meadows of Dan, Virginia.

We don’t have mountains but we do have Buttes and sweeping views... Pretty good schools, good hospitals...etc. My area is in North Central Texas about 25 miles north of Fort Worth... No Income Tax, lots of jobs in Shale gas and oil country. Wise County Texas... Semi-Rural... good people... Record voter turnout last Tuesday - 85% for Romney... Google Map Decatur TX... or Lake Bridgeport - Runaway Bay, TX... live on the lake... Need some City life - Fort Worth is not far away... Glenn Beck moved to a rich enclave in the DFW suburbs about 25 miles from here.

We absolutely love the Black Hills of western South Dakota. Ultra conservative, great medical facilities, good shopping, cultural events, good airport, beautiful scenery, friendly people, no state income tax, Interstate Highway 90 (if you need to go anywhere else), some very nice restaurants (plus all the fast food places), growing economy, low unemployment rate, low crime rate. The weather is not nearly as bad as most think. We get a few days above 100 degrees in the summer and a few days below zero in the winter, definitely four seasons.

As a military brat (and wife), I’ve lived all over this country and a few other countries. This is the best.

But don’t tell anyone else.

The same ones who have wreaked havoc on Calif are now on their way to Texas and Montana.

Look at north dakota and texas. Or New Zealand. Arizona is still pretty good, with bambi’s war on carbon you could install photovoltaics and only have to worry about gas.

Personally - I’m moving to Thailand in the Spring - 2013... I love my home here in Wise County but my retirement income tells me I have to go live someplace really inexpensive. I will be Teaching English to Thai citizens. My lovely country home is for sale ... 3/2 on 4.5 acres in a grand setting.

While not ideal (yet) we are winning the battle here in Michigan and could use all the conservative help we can get. We've got a solid GOP majority in the state legislature and a majority of our US congressmen are republican. We're defeating the unions one battle at a time as well. Its a beautiful state with a wide range of terrain. The state is pretty sparsely populated north of Lansing. Plenty of hunting and fishing with good gun laws both open and concealed carry.

My far southern corner of Michigan.

I'd certainly suggest a visit to take a gander.

Check out South west Missouri. We are still a conservative state, that area is Reagan country. We have the Hancock Amendment, which means no new taxes, unless we citizens vote on it.

Some pension incomes are excluded from the income tax. Even the Democrats in this state tend to run on no new taxes platform.

Republican controlled legislature and Many in the Administration is also Republican. Still have that Dem Governor and Senator though.

Several FReepers are in Alaska, and from their descriptions I’ve often wished I could move out there. I have family I want to stay near, and health issues that are made worse by cold weather, or I probably would have moved out there years ago.

A number of years ago on another forum (gun forum), one member told a story of moving to N. Idaho, and how, after he felt he could trust his neighbor (fellow prepper), confided that he had "about 10,000 rounds of ammunition for his weapons".

His neighbor, with deadpan expression replied "that's OK, there is still time to buy more..."

Classic Idahoan response. I have clients from Sandpoint to Boise, all are great people and will be seeing some of them next week on our way through.

Greenville, SC...very family friendly, conservative, near the great Smoky Mountains, great location to Charlotte, Atlanta, Chattanooga, TN....a beautiful area, with very nice weather, four distinct seasons. Great schools, public and private, as well as collegiate: Clemson, Furman, Bob Jones University, et al. Great family oriented entertainment, and just the right size of area that you’ll feel a part of the community in no time. Anyway, that ought to be enough to spark your curiosity.

Easily Idaho. The libs have the university towns in MT as well as the area around Flathead Lake. I live in Eastern WA, almost in ID and not far from Canada. This part of the state is cheap to live and conservative. If it weren’t for no WA state income tax I’d be going to ID quickly. Coeur d alene area very nice but more expensive real estate than NE WA. Be advised, ID has a real estate tax on “view”.

Personally I'd say go to Idaho. The parts of Montana that newcomers find to their liking are generally overrun with folks from California. The other parts of the state are pretty tough to get along in economically unless you can bring your job with you.

I’m in Eastern Washington,Stevens County, conservative, no state tax, average sales tax, low property taxes (paying $500 on 8 acres) beautiful scenery, and for the most part, good, God fearing people. My only complaint is our political voice is lost West of the Cascades. The weather is about what you’d find in the New England states. That being said, being joined to the pan handle of Idaho would be utopia.

I like east Tennessee. New VW plant in Chattanooga, nurses always in demand, no state income tax, consistently red state. Absolutely do not tell the natives how you did it elsewhere. You’ll only piss ‘em off and they are likely armed. Otherwise very friendly. Summer can be long and hot but winter isn’t as brutal as you’re used to. Good luck.
