A 15-year-old Alabama boy is in critical condition today after he was shot in the head by a friend during prank that police said went terribly wrong.
Jesse Rainey, 15, and seven male friends were spending the weekend at an unoccupied home that belonged to the grandmother of one of the boys, when a few of the teens decided to prank their friends by faking a home intrusion, Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May told ABCNews.com.
One of the young men cut the lights to the house, then a few of the other guys snuck back inside, wanting their friends to believe there was an intruder, May said.
The teens were in the process of using flashlights to find the switch box, when Rainey jumped out of a closet.
His rattled friend immediately dropped a video game and fired a shot into Raineys head with a .38 caliber hand gun.

Given the possibility that there was a home invasion there were very good reasons for having a gun.
If my lights suddenly go out and stay out and there’s no thunderstorm going on, I’d definitely get a gun.
Then again, the kids around here would probably do it in between stealing air conditioners and junk they can resell on ebay.
I have the same feeling.
I wonder if Russian Roulette is involved.....
What if you are in the house with 7 other teenage boys (and you can’t see them all at once) at 3 am?
How much possibility of a home invasion is there in the backwoods of Tuscumbia, Alabama (Northwest Alabama, about a hundred miles from any city)? The house belonged to one of their grandmothers and unless she was a drug dealer and this house was a crack house, I’m not buying the possible home invasion argument. No, the kid was farting around with the gun to impress his friends.
It happens
Seemed to happen a lot in rural South Carolina. Copper thieves are getting pretty bold.
My thought exactly.
The idea he was using the videogame as his improptu flashlight came to me because I use my iphone as my improptu flashlight all the time!
