(CNN) -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison for bankrolling a deadly dogfighting ring, now has a dog.
"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," he said in a statement released Thursday. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals."
He added that "our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

Right Mike!! We believe. You’ve seen the light!! /s
As a dog owner I truly hope Vick has realized what a horrific thing he did to those dogs...people change..i hope he has..but, I think the humane Society, or some group should check on his pet from time to time to make sure it’s cared for...
So what did he get?
A pit pull or a poodle?
Ack. Pit Bull, not Pit Pull. Sheesh.
Good for Michael Vick!
Now he can have Obama over for dinner.

I’m curious about which breed he chose for his new pet.
Not all pit bulls are bad, I don’t think. We have 2 or 3 that play at the doggie park with my dogs. They seem friendly and playful—but I think all of the doggie owners are keeping their eyes on them just in case...I know I am when they are playing with one of my dogs.
I think it a bit odd that the article didn’t mention the breed of his new dog........
Child abusers and molesters aren't allowed around kids, why is this POS allowed around dogs?
He had spoken openly about wanting to own a dog and in July told CNNs Piers Morgan that he did not want to deprive his daughters from having the pet because of his crimes. Asked what kind of dog he would get, Vick said that he would allow his children to choose, but it certainly wont be a pit bull.

This dog is a member of his family. That doesn’t stop him from thinking that dog fighting is fun and a proper sport for a man, any more than a criminal who loves his mother or his brothers feels any compunction against assaulting and robbing those outside his circle.
Thanks for the reply. I was curious—but to be honest, it certainly isn’t any of my business...........

A dog can be one of the very best teachers, who can show you yourself better than most skilled psychotherapists.
If he has not already, perhaps, with his family's love and example, he will learn what so many others understand.
wow how cynical are you? I guess you don’t believe in redemption and having a second chance. Everything that this man has done after coming out of prison (the time served for his crime) has shown that he indeed has had a change of heart.
I am so glad that you lead such a perfect life
“A dog can be one of the very best teachers, who can show you yourself better than most skilled psychotherapists”.
That is a true statement provided your aren’t a sociopath. Sorry... but Vick proved himself a cruel person by what he did previously. He didn’t participate in a one time only dog fight. He organized, financially supported and fully participated in an ongoing breeding/dog fighting/execution of numerous dogs. Over and over... this was his fun time. A hobby. Anyone that could throw a defenseless puppy or small breed dog into a ring for a larger dog to rip apart as part of “training”... is beyond self redemption. He’s beyond psychiatric help as well. IMHO.
child molesters do not have changes of heart....
Mike Vick’s abuse of dogs was a cultural stupidity inculcated by a segment of society that thinks things like cock fighting and dog fighting is acceptable. That is what he grew up with. It is who he WAS. He has since shown that after serving time for his crime he indeed has changed.
Good for mike Vick. I hope he and his family enjoy their pet for years to come
Vick may have proved himself cruel but that does NOT make him a sociopath....a term you are quick to throw around.
And I am so happy to know that you can tell whether a man has had a change of heart and is grateful for a second chance. Always good to know that God walks amongst us
