I'm looking for some new wine to try but don't want to break the bank. I'm tired of the same old, same old that I always buy.
I know there are a lot of regional wineries which produce limited amounts of affordable wine, but it would be most helpful to have suggestions of wine that can be obtained nationally.
Thanks and cheers!
Cecchi Chianti Classico is usually a good value as is Gabbiano chianti.
Columbia Crest Grand Estates make a good wine. I keep them in my cellar and in the laundry room fridge, along with other wines. That is my wine cooler. The fridge had to be adapted to hold the wines and champaigns. It’s neat.
I’ve not seen that one, who makes it?
Beringer makes the best one I've had. There's only a few who do. Sutter Home, and (I think) Woodbridge. I think there's a Mondavi label that makes one, too.
Self ping for later perusal.
Thank you, I’ll look for it. I prefer a pretty dry wine, and use the “sweet” ones for a dessert..
I like and agree with your tagline.
While I *used* to buy wines in the $10. range, it almost impossible to find really good $10. bottles....that you would buy again.
I especially like the *Tohu* branded Chards and Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand. Consistently bright and slightly sweet. They are running between $12. and $14./bottle. [sometimes they are on *sale*].
If you have a hang-up about buying wines only from the USA...I’d suggest the selections from Washington state...especially Chateau Ste Michelle, Snoqualmie, or Columbia Crest. I’d put up Chateau Ste Michelle’s Rieslings against anything from Europe.
Check out the selections in your wine purveyor from Argentina and Chile.......often good buys and excellent full-bodied reds. I find once you find a brand you like from SA....you can’t find it again.....consistent stocks are hard to find, in some cases...I miss finding Argentine *Trumpter* reds, pinots.
The *BEST* wine I ever had was a Saint Clair from Marlborough NZ [’04 Sauv Blanc] ...IIRC, Wine Spectator rated it a 98 that year.
We make a run every month to *no-tax* NH for booze, cigs and fireworks....it’s what we do. :)
I used to get *RWH* too...and discovered that if I sip a lot of ice water between sips of red....the headache never develops....seems to dilute the tannins. Either that, or don’t drink half of grape products produced....that’s a depressing thought. :(
We should share a glass and talk. New Zealand whites and a BBQ...talk about a lost week-end! Thank God I’m not lactose intolerant and love sausage and very rare beef. The first BBQ I went to I was nearly falling down on the floor saying, “that’s really good punch.” They were all laughing at me- “idiot, it’s white wine with peach Schnapps.”
I've not tried it yet. Fun stuff to see young entrepreneurs off to such a good start in life, especially in this economy.
Ya know,,,,, I can eat grapes with no problems. But then I only eat a few at a time.
Yikes! I prefer the European, slow, steady drip throughout the day. Sane, relaxed, and functional, but not drunk. No antidepressants, no Valium, and much more functional than being on prescription drugs. A glass of wine at lunch....a little tension easing. It’s not quite the same as an American 3 Martini lunch. Our regard for alcohol is is ridiculously messed up.
Franzia or Almaden Chablis at ~$10/5 liter bag in a box.
“Ah, Cisco...”
“Ay, Pancho!”
When I was a kid, almost 60 years ago, our family babysitter had an arbor that grew over their patio. Green grapes. You squeezed the butt-end, and the grape peeled itself. Very juicy. Haven’t seen grapes like that since!
Three Buck Chuck (Charles Shaw) at Trader Joe’s gets our vote.
Wonder if those were Muscat grapes?
If your meanderings bring you to Connecticut ....most definitely we can share some good vino and rare, rare beef! Ping me!
