Is Sunflower Oil Healthier Than Regular Vegetable Oil?
Self | October 1, 2012 | PJ-Comix

I have coupons that allowed me to buy FREE Sunflower Seed Oil. Actually it is 80% Sunflower Oil and 20% Extra-Virgin Olive Oil. I read somewhere that Sunflower Oil is the healthiest of the vegetable oils. I used it to fry onions last night and it tasted fine. So am I just fooling myself or is Sunflower Oil really healthier than regular vegetable oil?

Five Guys does their fries in sunflower oil. Best tasting fries on the planet.

Five Guys FAQ

Q: Do you offer any food which is suitable for vegetarians?

A: ...Finally, our fries are just plain potatoes cooked in 100% peanut oil and are suitable for even vegan diets.

Yes, it’s the hydrogenated coconut oil that’s unhealthy. Pure virgin coconut oil is very good for you; it’s been shown to have antibacterial/antiviral/antifungal properties.

I keep a jar to use for other purposes, too....it’s great for the skin, for removing makeup, and for conditioning my long curly hair.

My fil's family is from Italy (by way of Puerto Rico since that was the easier immigration route back in the day).

Was that family name Lombardi? I lived in Puerto Rico as a kid and our family doctor was Doctor Lombardi whose origins were obviously Italy. One time I was jumping up and down on the metal springs of a bed sans mattress and slipped and hit the edge of the bed frame right next to my eye. A quarter of an inch over and I would have lost my eye. My mother rushed me to Dr. Lombardi who put stitches there since I was bleeding profusely. No damage to my eye but I still have a backward "L" shaped scar next to my eye. I am very sensitive about that scar so please don't stare at it.

What's the matter with you? Why are you staring at my scar?

That article link you posted has this very interesting fact:

Coconut water, on the other hand, according to the article above, is a better sports hydration drink than ANY of the commercially available sugary sports drinks...

So drinking coconut water is better for you than Gatorade. Now I wonder if any sports teams will switch to drinking coconut water.

No, but it was evidently a very common route to get around the limited Italian immigration quota's at the time. Since my fil's father was born in Puerto Rico and we have the birth certificate to prove it, we were able to get one of my daughters a very modest ($400) scholarship reserved for people of Hispanic origin, LOL! My fil was not amused. He wanted us to turn it down. We didn't and he got over it. Just shows you the abject stupidity of these ethnic preferences.

I told my fil that if a Mexican can come to the U.S. illegally, pop out a baby and claim instant American citizenship for the baby, why can't an Italian move to Puerto Rico, pop out a baby and claim Hispanic preferences a couple generations later.

I’ve been using it to make popcorn. It works.

I nibble on sunflower seeds pretty much constantly while drinking scotch, and I haven’t noticed any increased anxiety.

Most vegetable oils should be avoided. Not only do they throw off your omega 3 to 6 balance, which will get you inflamed and lead to possibly every ailment known to man (especially neurodegenerstive diseases like alzheimers and parkinsons) but the way they are processed makes them rancid and toxic.

Organic cold pressed olive oil is healthy as long as you eat it cold or warm — as in salad dressings or a spritz after your food is cooked. To cook with, the healthiest fats are organic coconut oil and butter and any other animal fat from a healthy animal.

Yes, everything we were taught about fats and oils was basically wrong. Most cardiologists are not even caught up, but to those who research go the spoils of actual good health. Google Mark’s Daily Apple. It’s a great comprehensive site for info on biological science in health.

Everyone would do well to stay far away from standard vegetable oils. Oh, and every canola oil is GMO. You become an unpaid lab rat to see what herbicides do inside your body.

I hate to tell you this, but Crisco is pure transfat. Hydrogenated. You do not want to be putting it on your skin because it goes right into your bloodstream and even if you hate Bloomberg making a stupid law against the stuff, it really will mess you up. Buuuut - get a big wide mouthed jar of organic coconut oil. It will do the same thing, but it will give you health and even help prevent Alzheimer’s. one jar will also last you all winter in your bathroom, so still way cheaper than commercial junk with 400 ingredients, and it smells good too. Remember that under 75 degrees it will be a (nicely spreading) solid, so to get your hand in the jar, you will need that wide mouthed plastic jar.

I can’t believe I as a Jew am saying this, but lard —— only from a healthy pig -— is very healthy! Crisco is most definitely nothing but harmful. Lard is excellent to cook with, though of course I do not. But I could use beef suet or chicken shmaltz. Animal fat from free range or grass fed or -— healthy pigs, I don’t even know much about healthy pigs, lol, — animals is good for you.

Yeah, our dogs love ‘em, too. (We had to move the bird & squirrel feeders to keep them from snacking)

Any health food store will have it, and some larger grocery stores that stock organic things may have it too. I’d call your local stores first and see who’s got it.

Excellent post. Saved me some time. I actually knew one of the people that developed rape seed oil for consumption (canola.) Son of Satan. I avoid it at all cost. My cupboard has olive, coconut, sunflower, walnut, avacado (love it), and peanut oil. I might have a couple more, but I’m not going to look. Also, 2 thumbs up for butter and lard. I don’t have lard, but I have a lot of frozen butter thanks to price increases in this economy. Anything hydrogenated...a killer.

Cooking oils, simplified

These days, the selection of cooking oils at a typical supermarket can rival the selection of products in the paint aisle at the hardware store — the endless amount of options can be overwhelming.
