What 'Looper' tells us about the American future
Fox news ^

Which science-fiction scenario better describes the future: “Star Trek” or “Blade Runner”? That is, can we look forward to the utopian vista of “Star Trek,” in which we humans have solved the problems of earth, leaving the rest of the universe for us to explore? Or must we dread the smoggy dystopia of “Blade Runner,” in which a brutal world is divided starkly between the huddled poor and the rich luxuriating in their guarded enclaves?

Obviously the author of this piece never read "The Skull" by Philip K Dick. I am sorry, but the basic premise of this film is not original.

Science Fiction isn’t about the future. It’s about the present. In an optimistic age, we get Star Trek. In today’s fascist America, we know we’re on the wrong path, we see no easy way to change direction, and we think that things we mostly just get worse. And so we make that kind of movie.

I think our future most closely resembles THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN.

I didn’t like Looper.

I did have a laugh at solar powered cars. They were older cars from todays time with solar panels on them.

Just rent it if you are going to see it.

Save your money for something else.

This isn’t true.

Star Trek was a very optimistic view of the future in very turbulent times when it first appeared in the 60’s. 2001 was also very hopeful in its tone.

A few years later we got the dystopian Clockwork Orange, while not necessarily true science fiction it was based on future society.

The 80’s ran the gambit from Blade Runner and Alien on the dystopian side, the best of the best of the Star Trek movies II and IV were the worst of times and best of times respectively. You also had very hopeful Sci-Fi set in contemporary times like ET, The Last Starfighter, Starman.

The genre lends itself to the best and worst in the best and worst of times.

I’m sticking with ‘Mad Max’ as the best bet for our future.
Or maybe ‘Rollerball’? ‘Marathon Runner’?

According to the Obama administration, Occupy Whatever and the mainstream media, our country is already a brutal place that is divided starkly between the huddled poor and the rich luxuriating in their guarded enclaves.

My guess is that we will end up like the U.S. in “One Second
After”.

I could not finish reading it. My son developed Type 1
diabetes while I was reading. He is ten years old.

...It was just too scary to continue.

Check out the Day Break books. There are two at present. Absent He3 I think we are no more than twenty years out. Except those days be shortened no flesh would survive

And for bonus points:

What is the commonality between Blade Runner, Brazil and Atlas Shrugged....?

It took me about 6 months before I could get the courage to read One Second After...turns out it was a great book. Scary, but good.
Sorry about your son. That book obviously made you much more aware of the seriousness of his condition. Pray that things don’t go the way of that book, and pray for progress from the medical side of this disease. There IS hope on the horizon.
Again, sorry for your son’s condition.
