I remember a story several years ago about the death of an aged Chinese man who was a eunuch. His parents had him castrated thinking he would be able to have a good career in the imperial palace, but soon afterwards the last emperor was ousted...so no career opportunities.

Eunuchs were important officials in the later Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire--and were generally hated.
