Building a comprehensive food stockpile is a daunting task, to say the least. For that reason, I recommend you begin stocking your home grocery store with basic foods that will enable you to survive during a relatively short-term (two weeks to three months) emergency and then gradually expand your inventory to enable you to survive a long-term emergency (one year or longer) that includes a full array of food and non-food items necessary and tailored to your familys needs and likes.
When considering what to store, keep in mind young children, babies, elderly family members and your pets. Keep special needs items on hand also such as baby food, formula and pet food. Dont forget the toilet paper.
The following 12 categories of food items (stored somewhere in your home) could very well save your life and the lives of many others in an emergency situation.

When the time comes, I’m all about moonshining. Yes sir.
As a matter of fact I read that a 14 yr old Jack Daniel made some serious money during the Civil War selling to both sides.

Another question, Kartographer: Where is the best, most economical source of a Berkey gravity fed water filter?
I get mine off E-Bay
kind of a stretch isnt it? total chaos and breakdown? planting seeds in the backyard?
Is there an average price that I should be searching for?
Say around $100-$110 with free shipping.
Thanks, Kartographer. I really DO appreciate your input.

Around our house there will be plenty of regular rats I imagine for a bit longer than the squirrels. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to look up some Asian recipes for them. Meat’s meat.

“Brown rats and roof rats were eaten openly on a large scale in Paris when the city was under siege during the Franco-Prussian War. Observers likened their taste to both partridges and pork. And, according to the Larousse Gastronomique, rats are still eaten in some parts of France.”

It is also an excellent barter item. Someone here has mentioned getting a case/pallet of whiskey or vodka pints for that purpose. Stores well, maintains value.
You can come pretty close to keeping a good sized family alive for a year with a ton of potatoes and a ton of wheat. And on decent ground you can raise that on an acre, easy. Both grow true from seed, too, and they keep well without refrigeration. Throw in a good mix of other good garden seeds and you’re good to go.
Better make sure you have a decent hand crank mill for the wheat though. Pretty hard to make bread unless you can produce flour.
