MARYVILLE, Mo. Three weeks after Republican Rep. Todd Akin upended the national political landscape by claiming that pregnancies rarely result from legitimate rape, the race for Senate in this increasingly conservative state and in many ways the battle for control of Congresss upper chamber has settled into a waiting game.
A Sept. 25 deadline looms. Thats the last day Akin can petition Missouri courts to remove his name from the ballot and comply with the near-universal calls from party leaders who think his comments have made unwinnable a seat they need for an easier path to a Senate majority.
Akins opponent, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, is waiting, too hoping that Akin remains in the race but knowing that even if he does, reelection to the Senate is far from secure in a state that has turned sharply against President Obama.
In the balance could lie the Senate.

I wasn’t paying attention at the time. Somebody, what did he mean by “legitimate rape”?
CONpost doing a lot of wishful thinking along with McCaskill.
Anyone know?
He misspoke and corrected himself, no big deal.
I am thinking we might have time to replace Romney on the ballot now that he has flip flopped on repealing Obamacare.
Probably the same as Whoopi’s “Rape-rape”
Interesting. So now the Obama media is the only place still calling for his removal.
It seems to me that he was elected and should not be replaced without having committed some sort of crime or action involving moral turpitude. He made a statement that he thought was scientifically-based, and when it turned out not to be the case he apologized within a day. As far as I am concerned, case closed.
“He misspoke and corrected himself, no big deal.”
The problem now is Akin’s lack of money. I’m beginning to see McCaskill ads now, but nothing from Akin, no TV no radio and no mailings.
Obviously there is no compensatory funding to replace GOP denied funds, and since the GOP has said in no uncertain terms they will never give him money, I don’t see any one else stepping up. So most likely this seat is lost unless Akin steps aside.
That would be Robyn Carnahan, Secretary of State, a rabid Democratic hack, who can and would oppose and tie up in court any petition to withdraw from the race.
Akin is too conservative, the RNC has gone full RINO. I would never give a penny to the RNC.
He should not drop out.
“That would be Robyn Carnahan, Secretary of State, a rabid Democratic hack, who can and would oppose and tie up in court any petition to withdraw from the race.’
She may try, but the political pressure on her let the process continue would be intense. She may drag her feet for a short time, but the McCaskill campaign would quickly push her aside, as they don’t want the image of McCaskill’s party trying to suppress an election.
Rape that was truly rape, and not an after the fact excuse to get/justify an abortion. That is, if you take the context of what he has been saying in the House for over a decade. He really screwed up this answer.
The judge is all but required to grant the petition, if you look at Missouri election law.
Naaaah -- the GOPe will have egg all over its face if it let's this win slip through their fingers because of the misspeaking of Reince Priebus.
He can still apologize and we will all accept it, and then he can send all the money he wants without objection.
Missouri Republicans are very forgiving people.
“He should not drop out.”
Its not a question of should he or shouldn’t he, that was an argument for a month ago. The issue now is money, and he has none and apparently will not be getting any, not enough anyway.
At this time he should be deeply into funding county organizations and that takes money and people, lots of people. If you can’t pay and expand your staff, they leave or never sign up.
The state GOP also has cut off his funding, along with the national GOP.
What are his fund raising streams? who are his big contributors?
This was the GOP’s strategy all along starve him of money to force him out by the 25th.
Forget Akin. He could be behind by 40 pts, but his hardheadedness prevents him from doing the right thing and dropping from the race. The realistic window of opportunity has closed anyway, 25 Sept deadline or no, so he may as well go through the motions.
Grassroots supporters have to send money to Akin, and let the party know that they are reducing or eliminating contributions to the party in order to make sure that he is adequately financed.
What kind of a stupid party would put its ability to take the Senate at such substantial risk based on a statement of fact that was corrected within 24 hours after it was made?
“Missouri Republicans are very forgiving people.”
The lines have been drawn on this, the only person with the ability to change the dynamics is Akin. As they say the ball is in his court.
For the GOP to back down now would open the up the issue nationwide as every GOP candidate will be have to explain why their party supports Akin’s views.
They are not going down that road.
He should not drop out
The GOP has no qualms about funding some of the most liberal Republicans out there. The RINO’s are going all out and he should not reward them by dropping out.
