Mitt Romney irons clothes and shops at Costco
Chicago Sun Times ^ | 8/26/2012 | DAVE MCKINNEY

Romney, who has had troubles this campaign connecting with middle-class voters, made the statement about his wardrobe during an interview broadcast Sunday on Fox News.

Just the other day, he said, his wife, Ann, bought him a three-pack of Costco’s Kirkland-brand dress shirts.

“They’ve very nice shirts,” he told Fox News Sunday.

“He’s wearing them all the time now,” his wife then volunteered.

“I’m like, ‘that shirt looks pretty good. I got it at Costco.’”

Rich people stay rich by practicing frugality.

You are so right. Rich people are the "tightest" people in the world. They do not spend a penny more than necessary. No one gets rich by spending. They get rich by saving.

Just because one is rich does not mean he has to waste money on useless krap.

Compared to most people, I have a fairly high income. I have no wives current or ex, and no children. I have two cars, one a 1966 toyota landcruiser I rescued in Illinois for $3500 in 1999, and got back out west, which I rebuilt myself. And a 1996 ford taurus which I picked up at an auction for $1500 8 years ago. I have never owned a new car, nor do I wish to, because I don’t need one. Contrast to my sister who has a $50,000 car and earns less than a third than I do with 2 kids. She is always broke, in debt, and always a layoff away from disaster (she is a democrat of course).

I shop at Wal-Mart, and find good clothes at reasonably priced outlets.

If I won the super-lotto tomorrow, my spending habbits wouldn’t change one bit, because I have everything I need, and I’m happy with everything I’ve got. The only lifestyle change would be to focus on my business more, and become a consultant to my day job so I wouldn’t have to travel perpetually. (I am incapable of not doing something)

The only “luxury” item I’ve ever bought was my current house. It was a house I’ve wanted for years, I knew it was foreclosing, the bank f’d up unimaginably on the price, and only had bidding open for 3 days unannounced. So I cashed in the college account I had been saving for decades for children that obviously will never come, and I bought it.

18 grandkids make Costco a good deal

The man is trying to get a $50,000 car elevator installed in one of his half a dozen houses. He does not worry about saving a few bucks on shirts at Costco unless it's for the cameras.

Traditional mens wear blog “AskAndyAboutClothes” has several threads about the high quality of affordable Kirkland dress shirts and dress pants. Apparently, those in the know have been snapping them up for years.

One could argue that the elevator increases his property value when it comes to resale... In other words, an investment that is also fun to use. The same doesn’t hold true for clothing in and of itself.

Costco does make good, casual dress shirts. In my closet, I have custom made shirts from David’s, and I have shirts from Costco.

NB: if you’re not buying custom shirts, there is little difference between ready to wear makers, be they Costco or brooks brothers or Turnbull & Asser. Just a more expensive label.

Seriously. If he is that rich and wanders the aisles of Costco, I don’t want him as President. He needs to act his wage.

I hope Romney didn’t plant this nonsense. The press completely overplays it and no one really cares. Romney is rich. He buys nice clothes. He doesn’t need to shop in Walmart with the rest of us. And if he does, fine, but don’t announce it.

&&
Exactly. Rings as phony as the FWOTUS shopping at Target.

I'm a very small man. I can't buy anything off the rack. I can get away with places like Banks, Brooks, or even Macy's which do minor alterations for free. Fully custom is just not in my budget.

Some rich people are extravant (my copies of Architechtural Digest have pictoral proof). Others, like Ben Stein (who has one of his homes in my area) shop at local stores, including Walmart. He's written about some of the people he's met while shopping locally on his website.

This story rings true to me.

Quality rich people who made it on their own by doing what they love are not as materialistic as the "nouveau riche" type materialists.

Often the rich still take pleasure in getting the deal. Even though I'm not rich, I make more than I used to. But I still love getting Yoplait yogurts on sale and a cheap, nice Izod shirt at Ross.

I think the Romneys are the real deal. Sure they have some luxuries. But I don't think they're stuck up (like the current residents of 1600 Penn Ave). I beleive they are plain people with plain tastes in many ways.

I have to agree. Most of the truly wealthy people I know are extremely frugal.

I have to agree. Most of the truly wealthy people I know are extremely frugal.

Frugal people don't buy half a dozen houses across the country worth over $20 million (probably quite a bit more). They don't buy car elevators so they can squeeze more cars in their garage.

I could see owning a second home if you were spending half your time in another location, but Romney's got like 6, and they range from the upper six figures into eight figures, and some of them are vacation homes, which Romney does not shy from. The house that Romney wants to put an elevator in? It's in California on the coast, and he bought it because he wanted a house on the ocean and wanted to hear the water because it reminded him of Michigan. He's got a house at a ski resort as well.

Frugal people don't buy half a dozen huge and/or expensive houses around the US, including multiple vacation homes.

Even a single vacation home is not frugal.

You have a problem on how Romney spends his OWN money?

The homes can also considered assets.

Being envious of other’s hard earned wealth is not the American way.

Do have to give Costco credit in that they are closed on all major Christian and national holidays.
