Oh yeah they also vacate all wins from 1998-2011, and are on a five year probation.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8191027/penn-state-hit-60-million-fine-4-year-bowl-ban-wins-dating-1998

Short Excerpt:

The NCAA has hit Penn State with a $60 million sanction, a four-year football postseason ban and a vacation of all wins dating to 1998, the organization announced Monday morning in a news release.

“These funds must be paid into an endowment for external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university,” the statement said.

The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records, the statement continued.

Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period, the release said.

The NCAA revealed the sanctions as NCAA president Mark Emmert and Ed Ray, the chairman of the NCAA’s executive committee, and Oregon State’s president spoke at a news conference in Indianapolis at the organization’s headquarters.

“In the Penn State case, the results were perverse and unconscionable,” Emmert said.

“No price the NCAA can levy with repair the damage inflicted by Jerry Sandusky on his victims,” he said, reffering to the former Penn State defensive coordinator convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse last month.

So I guess that would make Eddie Robinson the official all-time coaching win leader again, and make Bobby Bowden #1 in Division I.

Wonder how this might effect their position in the Big Ten?

No bowls for 4 years, 5 years probation, a $60 million fine, reduced scholarships, and a few wins taken off Paterno’s lifetime record.....

But the football program STILL EXISTS.

WHY?

I believe Delaney has said they still reserve the right to levy their own punishment, including kicking them out of the conference.

The all time NCAA coaching win leader is John Gagliardi of St. John's University in Minnesota, a DIII school. He surpassed Robinson about 8 years ago.

“....vacate all wins from 1998-2011...”

OK, I’m not really a follower of college sports, so what does this really accomplish? It’s not like the kids who lost are suddenly gonna feel like they won. I guess what I’m asking is, does this really have any practical effect or is it just a “feel good” measure?

For those now running it and playing in it and those in the future who will who had nothing to do with this.

In consideration for the local economy, which would be decimated if they took away football.

Someone help me on the scholi reduction.

20 per year for 4 years, means what?
I thought the max per year was 25, so that would leave them with 5 recruits per year?

If so, that IS the death penalty.

SMU lost their whole football program because of cheating...this seems pretty lenient in comparison

Oh come on. Does the Catholic Church still exist? This was the work of the coaching staff not the football players. Why should they be punished? I say this is about right with regards to the punishment. Much worse than most receive for similiar circumstances.

“... what does this really accomplish?”

Not sure. When I first read it.. I thought what did the players do?! Isn’t vacating those wins a punishment against the players who (from my understanding) had nothing to do with this at all? Granted, JoePa was the coach but the players were the ones who won the games.

Paterno’s all-time wins total goes from 409 to 298. ER, Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryant now above Paterno’s total. JoePa goes from 1st in Div I to 7th.

No... SMU got the death penalty for cheating WHILE THEY WERE ON PROBATION...for previous cheating. They were, multiple, repeat offenders.

PSU's crime is more serious... but, they've never had any previous incidents. I think, this is what saved them from suspension of all football.
