He's not a dick in my book, and I'm not even sure that the folks who compiled this video are really saying that. Read some of the comments.

For those of you who never heard of him: Mr. Wizard

I would love to know what happened to those kids. They were always so polite and respectful. I would bet most were top in their class at the time and did well for themselves.

Mr. Wizard clearly was not concerned about artificially propping up the kids self esteem. He actually taught. Bravo to him.

Imagine if any of modern union teachers were in the show in place of the kids... I suspect he would have gleefully humiliated them.

“Herbert later joined the United States Army Air Forces, took pilot training, and became a B-24 bomber pilot who flew 56 combat missions from Italy with the 767th Bomb Squadron, 461st Bomb Group of the Fifteenth Air Force. When Herbert was discharged in 1945 he was a Captain and had earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.”

This is the first I heard of this!

I was going to comment about the manly way Mr Wizard dealt with kids.

He talked just like MY dad when we were doing something together and it was a teachable event/moment.

Then I read that Bill Nye said this in Mr Wizards obituary;

" Bill Nye wrote, "Herbert's techniques and performances helped create the United States' first generation of homegrown rocket scientists just in time to respond to Sputnik. He sent us to the moon. He changed the world"

During the "debates", Santorum said a few times, "America was built by kids that were home schooled"

I liked that ... and agree.

As much as I dislike Bill Nye he wasn’t wrong this one time. I think of guys like Homer Hickam, a coal country kid who built rockets.

Santorum was just plain right pretty much every time he spoke about education. Romney disgusts me but I could feel considerably better if he were to name Santorum secretary of education.

Pardon me but I found this Mr. Wizard parody. I first heard it over 32 years ago on Dr Demento. The video is of no importance. Pardon the distraction. No idea the reason.

Like many parents, the main priority of many teachers is that they want to be liked. They want the kids to think they’re “cool” - the kids’ best buds. Never mind trying to raise kids to be mature adults.

As Dennis Prager said, “You’re not raising kids. You’re raising adults.”

Those kids didn't build America. Someone else made that happen. < /Obama>

Mr. Wizard died in 2007. I remember that show when I was a kid. I thought he was pretty cool!

Though not born in La Crosse, Wisconsin (my hometown), Herbert grew up there and graduated from La Crosse Central High School. He is one the most famous people to come from La Crosse...admittedly not a very long list of people.
