I really enjoyed last night's episode.

For those interested, it will be re-played tonight at 7pm EDT just prior to Part 2, which comes on at 9pm EDT.

Costner *and* Paxton in one series? Sounds epic...

I meant to watch it then forgot about it.

I am no fan of Kevin Costner tho he is a good actor.

I know you said you liked it but how would you rate it critically?

Tonight will be the rating test, who come back.

No telling how many millions were spent to hype the thing.

Either I'm going deaf or something is seriously wrong with the sound quality or audio/mic settings used during production of this program. I had to enable closed captioning to understand what the hell everyone was saying. The vocals sounded muffled and were unintelligible much of the time. It's hard to read lips when everyone's got bushy mustaches! LOL! I haven't had this problem with any other program!

Okay, FR tell me it's just me but I bet others will chime in in agreement.

HEY H&Mc, MODIFY YOUR AUDIO SO WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT'S BEING SAID!

All kidding aside, it's nice to hear the History Channel is actually in the History business again...

I watched it last nigh as well. Unfortunately, I missed the first ten minutes so I had to try and piece together where the animosity between the two men was first ignited. I'll try and re-watch this part some other time as I'm currently away from a TV.

Both actors did a convincing job. Costner, for some reason tends to be an actor I can't really stand unless he's starring in a western, and then he's great!

I didn't even realize it was Tom Berenger playing Hatfield's violent uncle until I saw his name on the IMDB entry after the film was over. Powers Boothe, as always, is great in this genre.

My only complaint is the "Romeo and Juliet" sub-plot between Roseanne McCoy and Johnes Hatfield seems a little sappy. I wonder if this was true to history or if they added it to try and appeal to younger viewers?

Looking forward to Part 2!

I liked it.

Very interesting look at the complexities of the time. One McCoy brother a union soldier, the other confederate soldier and POW. Anse Hatfield a confederate deserter and friend of McCoy. All living in close proximity. And that was all before they got to the hog that supposedly touched it all off.

I enjoyed the episode as well....but Costners bad southern accent was distracting. (Seems he has trouble with accents...ie: Robin Hood and his bad english accent)

When TV and Movies do good stuff, people watch.

When they do leftist propaganda stuff, people don’t watch.

The formula is relatively simple.

The Civil War stuff was great, but as it went on it looked a little slow and televisiony. Sets and acting not as good as, say, Deadwood.

I’ll have to see if I like it better than my three top History Channel shows - Pawn Stars, American Pickers & American Restoration - “non-fiction” but more interesting than many documentaries and always with lots of history (and lots of “characters” too).

Been glued to my seat for the first two episodes. Loved every minute. Once or twice I heard phrasing in the dialog that sounded too modern, but I'm picky about those things.

The script is intelligent, complex and driving. This story has been oversimplified many times and reality just doesn't work that way.

I like that the role of "outside agitators" -- the McCoy family lawyer and Uncle Vance Hatfield -- is not ignored. I got a sense that Devil Anse and Ole Ran'l, with everything they had been through in their lives, were a hair's breadth from being life-long friends, but they could never rest.
