well, facebook is just one of many — if you have a bank account or loan, a gmail account, amazon account etc. your details are being used to ‘personalize’ offerings to you

Be very careful not to login through other sites or it won’t deactivate.

Well, I'm happy to report that their profiling (at least in my case) is totally worthless.

You had to write them by snail mail to get them kill it?

No. What I posted was their email response. I deactivated it and somewhere along the way I was given the option to permanently delete it.

I just went on and typed in “how to deactivate” and actually got the instructions on how to do it. And I, too, feel great! I told them my main reason was it’s a waste of time.

Maybe now a bunch of lefties will think I de-friended them. Which is basically what I did.

Then you can’t really speak from experience, can you? I’m not saying you would like it if you were on it, or ever been on it, but how can you say something’s nonsense if you’ve never tried it? It’s like people who have never listened to Rush Limbaugh saying they can’t stand his show. My brother in law has been on FB and now he says he doesn’t like it. But at least he’s speaking from personal experience. But there are obviously thousands and thousands of people who love it, including me.

It's only purpose is social.
You don't have to experience something to know that it is wrong or foolish.

Also, I’ve never taken drugs but I hear that there are many who do so and love it.

True. And political. And religious. But who needs to get their message out there anyway? It's not important.

The reason I am not on it because it is nonsense. I liked it a lot, simply because of the birthday remimders that popped up a week in advance by email. Then, family and friends started ragging me because I never responded to all the trivia BS they posted and I NEVER put up a 'status'.
I said to myself that I can fix this, and got the hell off. Do miss the reminders though. Oh well. No big deal.

If you don’t like it personally, so be it. But there is certainly nothing wrong with it. People having problems with it usually bring it on themselves. It’s a fun thing to do, and there is nothing wrong with that.
