Gun Manufacturers Rifle Making Suggestion

Gun and Rifle manufacturers, I want your attention.
I've been looking for a rifle/shotgun to take on a long hike, and there's not many choices.
Take a look at Henry's U.S. Survival AR-7.



It's a good product for backpacking, but too small on caliber.
The fact that when it's packed inside its waterproof stock, it can float if dropped into water,
and can be retrieved and will still work, is a great deciding factor.
But being a .22LR is a detractor.

Now take a look at the Rossi Circuit Judge and their many different variations.



I like the 3-inch Magnum .410 gauge and .45 Colt varity that can also shoot 2.5-inch shotgun shells in .410 ga.
At 85 and 1/2 ounces, that's pretty good and a lot of choices, from shooting birds, to defending against bears.
A stainless steel model is a must on the trail, due to 100 percent chance of getting rained on, and on a long hike, probably getting dropped.
But, we need the capability of breaking the rifle down and putting it in the backpack, similar to Henry's AR-7.
Rossi's Circuit Judge doesn't offer this. Here's where someone can make some money, building a rifle that would fit this need.

The main goal is to keep the total pack weight down, to preferably under 30 pounds.

Rossi offers a model with a Black Tactical "Blued" barrel and a Black Synthetic Stock that only weighs 75 ounces,
but a hiker needs a stainless steel or weatherproof finish and prefers
"the pieces when disassembled, fit inside a impact-resistant, waterproof stock, which will float."

Hey, you've got an old Louisiana squirrel hunter here. :) I grew up shooting a H&R 20 gauge topper junior, model 490, with a modified choke. It still sleeps less than 6' from me, every night. :) It was a gift to me from my dad when I was about 8 yo. My favorite shot is 7-1/2. With it, I've killed truck loads of squirrels at well over 20 steps and ducks as soon as they lock up. On a covey rise, back when we had quail in Louisiana (before the fire ant invasion), I usually knocked down at least two by carrying a couple of shells in my hand.

A rifled barrel spins the shot and causes it to spread greatly soon after exiting the muzzle. A smooth bore shotgun doesn't have that problem.

Just personal opinion, but given the choice for comparable pricing I prefer good used top quality over brand new lower tier. I figure if I decide I want something different later I have a better chance of getting my original investment back. It’s worked so far. YMMV.

Ruger pc-9 and ruger p-85. Rifle and pistol both 9 mm, take the same magazine. Rifle gives round a little more power.

New Jersey classifies both antique revolving cylinder shotguns and semi-automatic BB guns as "assault firearms." Yeah I dont like a short barrel on a 308. 18 is about as short as I like to go. My Savage Scout is 20 and its just right.

Note to left handed people on the Kel Tec SUB-2000, you get spryed with unburned powder as the shell ejects. If not for that, I would have kept my sub since it was so compact.

Does the “Stingers” work okay in the 10/22, or have you had any problems?

The stingers have worked good all these years. I usually know when to clean my rifle so no issues in reliability. I don’t constantly use stingers due to cost but when I use stingers, they work reliably. I have fired them into gallon jugs of water- they mushroom well. Close to .30 inch diameter.

Thats my opinion that they would work in your AR-7. That extra power in a stinger may come in handy when your firearm is dirty and you need it to cycle. The Ruger 10-22 is complex compared to a bolt gun or even a Henry AR-7 and stingers work in uger 10-22s so yes. Give it a try.
If not, CCI (who makes stingers at 32 grains), makes a 40 grain hollowpoint called velocitator that goes faster than regular high velocity 40 grain hollowpoints.

hindsight being 20/20 I think you are correct. You need at least 18” to stabilize a .308 round. .308 is pretty picky with bullet weight and twists. I remember trying to shoot “Special Ball” in a national match rifle with a barrel made for “National Match.” The results were not very good.
