UPDATE: Sunday, April 29th: Battleship is now up to $170 Mil worldwide without US release until May 18th.
Battleship, Universal Pictures big summer entertainment, cost over $200 million to make. You know its cheesy and not very good, so why subject the studio to American reviews? Very wisely, Universal has been opening Battleship around the world in advance of its May 18th U.S. landing. And the result: already $129 million in the bank. And more to come. These numbers are from Boxofficemojo.com. And they tell you why Ron Meyer is so good at his job running the studio. The movie has terrible reviewsits scored a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. One British reviewer simply called it trash. Universal calls it money and there will enough of it by May 18th to avoid a John Carter disaster. This is the new trend. If your movie is bad, play for it people who just need to see explosions and special effects. The movie stars non-actor Rihanna, and John Carter hero Taylor Kitsch.

The problem for Katy is that too many people will confuse her for Zooey Deschanel.
Just finished reading a book about the infamous movie Heaven's Gate, the film that destroyed United Artists because of bad word of mouth and a particularly ghastly review from Vincent Canby at the NYT, who called the movie the equivalent of a "forced four-hour walking tour of one's own living room". The whole fiasco was a groupthink hatchet job against a film that is at least worth a look, and is enjoyable to some.
Studios releasing overseas ahead of the US is indicative of a larger problem, and that is peoples' obsession with reviews and ratings, on everything from movies and music to washers and toasters.
What happened to experiencing things for oneself? I can't think of anything more worthless than the opinion of an anonymous stranger.
Hysterical! Esp. since we’re about to give our 4yo the game. Not sure if my wife will be amused or horrified by that pic...
Uh $10 ticket prices for movies.
“You sunk my movie studio!”
I taught my liberal cousin how to play battleship on paper when were kids.
MUAHAHAHA
LOL!
You’re officially my new hero.

LOL I had to post that on my Facebook!
Played that that game with my brother when I was a youngster...
Most of the best movies over the past few years have been foreign movies. Hollywood just makes liberal trash, or “Gee Look How Good Our Computer Graphics Are” crap.
Don’t worry, it’s not a real poster. :)
Experiencing things for yourself is fine if it’s free. If I’m gonna lay down $10 I want some level of indication that I’m not better off spending that money in a bar. Some movies I’ll go see no matter what the reviewers say because they’re topically in my wheelhouse, some movies I won’t see regardless of the reviewers because they aren’t. The rest of the pack I look up the rotten tomatoes collective data, maybe read a couple of reviews, just to get a feel.
They’d be okay with it if there were two lesbian mommies, and the daughter had a short haircut.
LOL!
Player one: "I 1"
Player two: "You did not!"
Player one: "D 2"
Player two: "Did not!"
I don't think the Battleship game cover art is sexist, but the girls seem to be a little too happy to be in that kitchen washing the dishes while the boys are playing Battleship. I think they have some kind of practical joke in the works.
I can see if maybe you thought the two hours was too much to risk, but $10? I hope I'm never that destitute.
They’re laughing at Dad’s sweater-vest.
“Who knows Cindy, Maybe in about 40 years, sweater-vests will be cool again?”
“Yeah Mom, but only for about two months.”
