ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WOOD) - A 45-year-old woman was rescued from Lake Michigan after she fell in while texting on her phone and walking on a pier, police said.
Bonnie Miller of Benton Harbor told 24 Hour News 8 she was with her husband and 15-year-old son when she lost her balance on the South Pier in St. Joseph. She was fully clothed and had trouble treading water due to the heavy current.
A passerby -- Rebecca Van Zant of Mishawaka, Ind. -- jumped into the water and was able to keep Miller afloat until rescue personnel arrived. A male clung onto a ladder on the side of pier to try and assist the women, police said.
St. Joseph police officers arrived on scene around 9:30 p.m. Monday and saw the people in the water.
Officer Chris Sysko threw a flotation device on a rope to the women. He was able to pull Miller back to the pier with the help of Van Zant and the rope.
Officers then pulled both women out of the water.
The St. Joseph Fire Department, Michigan State Police and United States Coast Guard assisted with the rescue effort.
The nineteen-year-old rescuer wishes to join the Coast Guard, not the texter. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.
Gotcha! Good luck to her. Hope she makes it.
The rescuer is a teen. The victim is 45 years old. I think you got them mixed up.
I can think of many reasons. Maybe he can't swim. Maybe the teen reacted and jumped in first. Would be stupid to jump in afterwards. And besides, the couple had a child. The husband probably did the right thing by staying on the pier.

Life is tough. It is even tougher when you are stupid.
Didn’t you get his tweet.
@dumbhusband: Wife just fell off pier. LOL!
I used to keep that picture of John Wayne (post card) in my wall locker as a young Marine. I loved that picture and love John Wayne...
“she was with her husband and 15-year-old son”
And a passerby had to jump into the water to save her?????

Her huband and son were unable, as they were rolling on the floor laughing their @$$ off.
Leni
Benton Harbor ?
Victim? Did you actually type "victim" into the comment, and not correct it on the preview? VICTIM?
Good gravy, we're doomed.
And a passerby had to jump into the water to save her?????
Well maybe the pier will be less crowded tomorrow?
“When you’re out of slits you’re out of pier.”
And her name is Miller. lol!
Forget that for a minute, (although you are 100% correct), where the heck was her HUSBAND in all this? Watching her drown?
Besides, you are right, it was a MAN who came to her rescue. Obviously not her husband who would only qualify as a *male* in this story.
I wonder if he has an insurance policy out on her?
FOTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m with post 30 on that point. I know my sons, the trained lifeguards, would be in hysterics ... although hopefully they’d get over it before I drowned, which I wouldn’t, because I’m also a lifeguard. And my husband can’t swim worth mentioning.
