Sen. Sherrod Brown denounces ‘niggardly’ colleagues

niggardly: Not generous; stingy (adjective/adverb)

It’s a word that has caused job-ending consequences in the past for politicians and others in the public eye because of its similarities to a racial slur.

However, that didn’t deter Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown from using it during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Dylan Ratigan Show” on Thursday, to describe how he thought some of his colleagues were acting toward veterans.

“Of course we’re falling short,” he said. “There are people, as you know Matt, in this Congress who will always send a blank check when it comes to spending money on defense or war, but are a little more niggardly, if you will, on spending money on the actual veterans when they come home. And that means we don’t greet them well enough in terms of getting them the right testing when they’re back in Conshocken, Cleveland or Lime, Ohio.”

As a native Southern California boy and conservative Republican, I’m especially proud to say I’m a Niggard With Attitude.

I remember back in the late 70s when a very liberal professor used the term niggardly in a lecture and caught all kinds of hell from his easily offended minority protected class scholars, demonstrating clearly that they didn't have the slightest knowledge of what that term meant. Still and all, he burst into relentless apologies for being insensitive instead of telling the idiots to use their dictionary (if they even had one).

Read what happens when an NC teacher uses the word.

“Deputy Superintendent Norm Shearin reiterated that Ms. Bell made a bad decision when she taught her students the word “niggardly.” It was an inappropriate word to teach children at that grade level, he said.”

“... Tannis Nelson, president of the N.C. Parent-Teacher Association and a New Hanover County resident, ... added that this incident shows the need for effective diversity and sensitivity training throughout the school system. “Incidents such as this can polarize the community,” Mrs. Nelson said. “We can’t allow that to happen. This can be captured as a teachable moment, and we can learn from it.”

Sen Brown used the word properly. That being said, we all know what would happen if he were a Republican.

He used a perfectly good word correctly. “Niggardly” has no relation whatsoever to that other word. I know others have gotten into trouble for using it, but why bow to ignorance?

Actually it does. They both share the same etymology.
While niggardly means “cheap” past frugal, nigg#r in the common context means “An unclean person” and was pretty common Pre Anti-Bellum.

Like the word “gay,” they have corrupted a fine word for crass political purposes.

Class & Racial warfare at its finest...

A few years ago in the vaunted WDC school system a teacher used the term and was fired after a chorus of people saying they were disrespected. The idiots didn’t know what the word meaned. The school board apparently didn’t care. Losers.

I was going by this:

“Niggardly,” from the Old Norse “nigla” to fuss about small matters; petty; unimportant. The other word is from the Latin “niger” : black or dark.

So a niggardly person would be a niggard, not the other word.

What you refer to might be a corruption or confusion of the words. I have seen “n*gger” in old American literature used by whites to refer to themselves; kind of like “sumbitch” used affectionately.

Brown and other public speakers would do wel to stick with “stingy.”. : )
