HILLANDALE, Md.,-- A Maryland woman said she was shocked when she saw her receipt from Radio Shack identified her as an "ugly itch" from "ghettohood, usa, tattoville, Maryland."
Shanae Lewis said she had a disagreement with a salesman at the Hillandale Radio Shack when she purchased a $20 cassette adapter and the salesman told her about Montgomery County's 5-cent bag tax, which she had never heard of because she is from Baltimore, WUSA-TV, Baltimore, reported Tuesday.
Lewis said she argued with the salesman for a few minutes before asking for a refund, which she received along with a receipt.
She said she was shocked to find the words "ugly itch, ghettohood, usa, tattoville, Maryland" typed at the bottom of the receipt.
Lewis said the salesman admitted to typing the words and said he was kidding, but she was not amused.
"I was shocked more so than anything, and then I became angry," Lewis said.
Lewis said she has contacted Radio Shack's corporate office and hopes to get the salesman fired.
Lost in this kerfuffle is the fact the clerk was correct: There IS a 5-cent tax on plastic bags there.
What’s the problem? Looks to me like he was right on target...
.
If this is real, the clerk should be fired.
Hell, if this were a white guy, he’d be executed at sunrise.
.
UPI is still around?
Hmm...did she tell the clerk to put that information in that way in the hope of threatening a lawsuit for the offense later?
Or is this something the clerk did of his own accord?
Move along, please.
I've noticed numerous comments in school, work, government, military, sports, homes, public transportation, supermarkets, etc. "that could be taken in a racists manner".
If a black man makes a derogatory comment to a black woman about her race, is that racist? If an Irishman calls another Irishman a "mick", is he being culturally insensitive? How about an Italian calling another Italian a "Wop"?
Is this even a transgression to use these words in a discussion of the situation, that is, are they not to be used even when discussing an issue in the same way the "N" word and the "C" word are?
If the answer is that those are not examples of cultural or racial insensitivity, then you must by definition believe there are and should be different speech codes for different groups of people. Do you believe that?
No fooling...
I think he tried to charge her 10 cents, because she appears to be a double-bagger.
I go by a self-imposed rule of “default respect”. If someone treats me with respect, I do the same. If they don’t, I consider myself to have the right to treat anyone as they treat me.
This does NOT, however, extend to a work environment.
If I owned the company, fine. I could do what I want, consequences be damned. If I was selling hot dogs from a cart and a customer was a jerk, I would consider it my right to return fire as I saw fit.
But If I am working for someone, then I do not have the right, ever, to be be anything but externally respectful, polite and helpful.
Period. No ifs, ands or buts about it.
If this guy did what he did, he hasn’t a leg to stand on. If I owned this company, I would reserve the right to be able to fire this person, no questions asked.
I work in medicine. I am not allowed to be rude or impolite. Period. And that is as it should be.
Those two should get together.
That could be a racist and disrespectful comment!!!!!!!!!
Agreed. But again, once she crossed the line, all bets are off. He made a bad choice in writing it down, but then again, I don’t think he was off-base on his assessment (imprudent as it may be.)
Even longer than that with Laz, he has said he would hit Helen Thomas, and she has been dead for years.
I imagine that, if any of those freepers were actually in charge of determining the employee punishment, they would take it seriously.
But this is a discussion thread, and people just like to discuss.
For myself, I was just happy when I saw his picture and he wasn’t white. I was afraid my race would be pilloried again because of the offensive actions of one person. Seems absurd though for my mood to be in any way affected by the actions of some guy I don’t know and will never meet.
But that’s what happens — those who claim we should be treated individually are the first to attack an entire race, so long as that race is white; and to attack an entire gender, so long as that gender is male.
LOL, I don’t think he was off base, but she kind of gives me the creeps.
That said, that imaginary line that can get crossed doesn’t exist when your paycheck is signed by someone else. (unless, you know ahead of time what latitude your boss gives you...I am pretty sure Radio Snack doesn’t have any “latitude”...)
At least he didn’t call her an igger.
