Boulder arrives at Los Angeles museum

LOS ANGELES, -- Residents say the newest acquisition by Los Angeles County Museum enjoyed a rock star reception early Saturday morning as the 340-ton boulder rolled into town.

The rock arrived at 4:30 a.m. aboard its 176-wheel transport truck to a crowd of admirers armed with cellphone cameras and noisemakers. The behemoth boulder will be the centerpiece of the art museum's new outdoor installation entitled "Levitated Mass," the Los Angeles Times reported.

When the transport truck broke down for 30 minutes, onlookers jumped at the chance to touch the rock, pressing palms to its protective plastic wrap.

"I came a long way to touch this thing, and it felt very impersonal -- I expected more intimacy from this rock," said M.M. Green, who later used his keys to slash an opening in the plastic wrap. After poking his fingers through the hole, Green smiled. "I'm having chills, if that means anything," he said. "I'm going back for seconds."

OK, I’ll bite.

I understand [can’t verify] that it’s one of the very few times in the history of man that a megalith has been moved.

If you check YouTube for “Levitated Mass” you’ll find lots of links of moving it.

It was blasted out of a mountain here in So Cal. Moving it was a problem as it is two storeys hugh and almost as wide. Many streets have overhead wires and weight limits so it was years before permission could be gained to move it. The load was three lanes wide.

So it was moved on selected streets only between midnight and 5 am. About 5 miles a night. Some of the videos are quite engrossing. It goes oky until the truck has to make a turn:

Night one of moving the rock. Only 5 miles a night on streets with no wires. Load is three lanes wide:

Only 5 miles a night between midnight and 5 am. Load is 3 lanes across and two stories high so the had to avoid wires and roads with weight limits. It took almost two weeks.

Every night was documented on You Tube. Search Levitated Mass:

Frankly the transporter impresses me more than the rock.

Me too.

They hired the company who had the rep for moving the heaviest items. They did a great job.

The rock going through Hacienda Heights.

Going through La Mirada.

Avoiding wires as it is 2 stories tall and has to meet weight requirements:

I don’t know how to verify this but they are saying this is the ONLY time a megalith has been moved since ancient times. Clearly it easier to move than Stonehenge or the Pyramids. Would love to know the answer.

Coming through K-Town in LA just about a mile or two from LACMA. A huge turn!

I only heard about this 48 hours ago or I [a photography freak] would have been out there taking photso:
